Angel's Rest Hike with Tom

This hike has some really great views of the Columbia River gorge from a rocky outcrop. And it's not far from Portland and not too tough, so ends up very crowded on summer weekends! Arriving around 8:30 got us one of the last spots in the overflow parking lot. On the way up, lots of solo hikers already on the way down, then a few pairs. On the way down, no solos, only pairs and some loud, boisterous groups. Fair number of dogs were doing the hike.

Strength 25:00 [1]

Prenatal yoga. Finally had Shana, the person who normally leads these sessions. Good, but not terribly different than the instructors she trained, so I guess she did a good job teaching!

Crosstrainer 20:00 [2]

Pre-pilates super-elliptical. Gorgeous Portland day, so wish I were getting outdoor runs in!!

Strength 45:00 [1]

Pilates. The most awkward thing is really getting up and down and switching positions on the mat with the belly. Pretty sure Pomegranate was doing some pilates of her own again today. Strange that my body is her resistance training band...

Hiking 10:00 [1] 0.76 mi (13:10 / mi)

Treadmill hiking at 6% and 13:02 pace.

Crosstrainer 13:00 [1]

Aw. Someone else was on the super-ellitpical. So I got one of the boring ones. Still doing hikes in New Zealand as 'courses' this time to Pancake Rocks.

Hiking 7:00 [1]

Stair treadmill at 68 stairs per minute.

Crosstrainer 13:30 [1]

Little pre-Pilates cardio!

Strength 45:00 [1]

And Pilates. Barre work again, which is pretty calf-agony-inducing!

Battle Ax - Hike #8 in CC100

So this was a great hike to the tallest peak in the Bull of the Woods Wilderness, Battle Ax at 5558'. We saw snow, some cool alpine melt ponds, lots of wildflowers and truly amazing views of Jefferson, Hood, the Sisters, probably St. Helens and a few other non-ID'ed snow covered peaks. Saw only two other pairs of people, two women coming back from backpacking early on and a couple at the summit.

Perhaps equally notable as the hike was the remarkably terrible road there. We tried to do a different hike first, but were thwarted by active logging operations. So bailed to this one, but it required 7 miles of driving on forest roads that a low-clearance vehicle really had no business on. Cynthia prevailed, but only by going as slow as 3mph through some sections. Mountain biking would have been quicker.

Camping at Detroit Lake was fine, but not amazing. Next time we should book earlier to have a campsite further from the road and closer to the lake.
