running 45:00 [2]

On the way home I went to Slough Creek. I had the in-progress map in hand and looked around the area. It is better than I remember from the 1980s. The woods seemed nicer. I suppose they may actually have becoms nicer. I was half expecting the entire forest to be bush honeysuckle.

I jogged around, including on the hiking trail. That's new feature since the 1980s. I'll use the GPS track to sketch the trail in.

They've closed off several of the roads in the park. I suppose that cuts down on maintenance, but it reduces the number of spots you could use as the start/finish/registration area for an event.

I stopped at the boat ramp near the bridge at Slough Creek. I jogged a bit of the blue trail heading east from the boat ramp area. I'll use the GPS track to sketch in that trail.

I was getting tired at the end.

Note

Slough Creek update: I can no longer say the map is entirely a desk mapping project. I visited the area on my way home from Ft Leavenworth and looked around a bit.

I've added the hiking trail based on a GPS track.

I noted that I've been over drawing some features from the lidar data. In particular, I've drawn some streams that should probably be ditches and some ditches that should be removed. The features show up clearly in the lidar, but much less clearly in the terrain.

The lidar vegetation for runnability is really good.

I confirmed that a couple of the roads are blocked off. I thought I could see locked gates on the air photo, but wasn't sure. Now I'm sure.

There are areas of rocky ground that I'll need to add. I wonder if they show up in some way in the lidar? I'll look. If not, I may sketch the areas in using the old 1983 map.

Ft Lev Adventures orienteering. I jogged around the course and didn't plan to go to all of the markers. My idea was to stay out about 65 minutes.

I was pleasantly surprised by the lack of spider webs and that the trails were in great shape despite last night's rain. I went off trail to the control at Fort Sully and the woods were nice.

Oh, and the temps were wonderful - right about 50F at the start.

Met Matt, a USMAOC alum from about 10-15 years ago. He'd gotten in touch with Mary before he came to Leavenworth, so it was good to see that he made it to an event. He seemed interested in doing some of the PTOC and OK events. He also said there were another 5-6 USMAOC alums from his time at West Point. Maybe he'll be able to get some of them out. The problem is that the people at the CGSC are almost always really busy with school and kids.

Fun.

NoLaw 5K - the last race in the series. I missed the August race.

The temp was pleasant (~70F) and I expected to run faster than I did. I was a little unmotivated, but I'm not sure why. As a result, I was a bit lazy.

Biked to/from Clinton. Very pleasant weather.

I observed a lot of bad drivers. People really need to put down their phones.

Note

Slough Creek: The map is far from done, but I figured it'd be interesting to do a test using CheckOMap

http://oapp.se/Applikationer/CheckObjects_HowItWor...

I haven't looked at the results in great detail, but it looks like most of the notes are about places where a contour line shape is too tight/small. For example, a contour that shows a steep ditch/gully area where the edges of the gully need to be a bit wider apart. That might not be as big an issue as the map is going to be 1:10000 and CheckOMap uses 1:15000.

MTB cycling 2:10:00 [1]

MTB on roads, levee, and the river trail.

The pleasant weather continues and it is so much nicer to exercise when it isn't hot.

Like yesterday, I was surprised that I didn't see many people out on the trails.
