orienteering race 15:00 [4] ***
13c

PTOC mini score (20 minute limit) onn a 1:2500 map of Stocksdale Park.

The rules required you to stay on the trails or mowed areas.

Rain began falling just before the start. It was dark in the woods, even with the large scale it was a bit difficult for me to read the map in the darkness.

Fun, but I didn't spot one of the controls and ended up not clearing the course.

orienteering 19:00 [4] ***
8c

PTOC sprint at Martha Lafite Thompson Nature Sanctuary (a couple of minute drive from Stocksdale).

Same trails/mowed area rules as at Stocksdale.

The rain was a bit heavier than at Stocksdale and it made it a little harder to read the map (and some of the trails were slippery), but mostly the rain just felt wonderful. The temp was about 60F and the rain was very pleasant. Hard to believe it is August.

MTB cycling 45:00 [1]

I went out for a bit of a bike ride on the bike paths - only a few rain drops.

MTB cycling 45:00 [1]

MTB on pavement and gravel on West Campus. I went up/down Half Ulrik's a few times. I also noticed that they are building a sidewalk through Pioneer Cemetery - so that's something new.

I feel pretty good today, but still don't have a normal appetite.

running 40:00 [2]

Felt good enough to try a run. I went to Clinton and ran the trails. I still feel a little weak and lack much of an appetite, but the run was nice.

The highlight of the run was meeting a timber rattlesnake on the trail. I don't remember ever seeing a rattlesnake before. It was in the middle of the trail and didn't want to move. Eventually it slithered toward the side of the trail and I decided to run by. I scared it and it coiled up, raised its head, at rattled at me. That was kind of scary.

I saw a bunch of the Trail Hawks when I was done. Allen L had spotted a rattlesnake earlier on the trail to Sanders Mound. The snake I saw was on the white trail at a point where it crosses an old stone wall.

Note

I felt reasonably good when I work up this morning, so I went to work. As the day went, I felt better and better. I didn't have an appetite at lunch but forced myself to eat a sandwich and some yogurt. Then I began feeling better and better.

On the way home from work I did a map walk (~2K) with a KP map of a streamway park in DeSoto. And when I got home I mowed the lawn.

I'll take one more day of rest and then should be back to chasing Cristina-bot (much as the Royals chase the Red Sox).

Note

Also, I wrote about some budget and tax stuff on FB last week and the issue got some coverage in the paper today:

Note

Dave and Bethany came to Lawrence for a visit this weekend. That was great.

Unfortunately, I haven't been well and have spent most of the time sleeping and feeling crummy. I'm feeling better, but not anywhere near normal, now (Sunday afternoon).
