Orienteering race (sprint relays) 13:47 [5] ** 3.1 km (4:27 / km)

First leg of the relays at Curtin University. The team line-ups looked interesting with no clear favourite. I happened to be on the same course as Fletch. He kept reminding me how unfit I am by running much faster, but every time I caught up again by picking slightly better routes. Was ahead for the first four controls and got in front again at #9, but started to tire and came in about 5 seconds behind Fletch to hand over to shanel.

Third leg of the relay. Shanel had given us the lead by overtaking Fletch's teammate Wil, but coming out of #3 I saw Fletch wasn't far behind. I still felt the effects of the first effort and couldn't keep the pace up, so knew Fletch would be coming past me at some stage. I had a small hesitation at #11, after which Fletch overtook me, but it was a fairly clean run overall. Just way too unfit, as Fletch stretched out his lead to nearly 20 seconds over the last few controls despite a minor error from him at #14. Lost about a minute to Fletch on this leg all up, but shanel had another good run on the final leg to catch Wil and hand us the win by a couple of seconds.
This was my first relays and it was great fun and exciting to have the teams coming in close together. Stormy weather didn't cause any trouble out on the course, but not much later in the afternoon, we had a blackout at home (along with about 110,000 other homes in the state). Took about 24 hours to be resolved.
