Day 1 at Easter. Not an auspicious start. Winsplits may claim I only had two error controls but I know better. Six errors from ten controls.
- Spiked because someone led me into it.
- Went on compass across flat terrain and missed what should have been an easy get. Lost .50
- Off bearing again. Lost 1.05
- Spiked.
- Off bearing. Lost .50
-Went below the cliff rather than above. Lost 2.05
- Off bearing again. Lost .25
- OK
- OK
- How did I lose 15 seconds on this. By following the fool in front of me. He went to the correct control, misread his control numbers, ran to another control then turned around and returned. I veered the wrong way losing time.
So theprovisional result was 13th losing 5.25 in errors. In retrospect, I blame coming into the event with very little race experience for the year and a large bubble in the compass that I only noticed at the start. Some experimentation revealed that the compass had a tendency to become stuck before making its full revolution back to true north. I ran with a spare compass in my pocket. Should have swapped after a couple of bad bearings. Not happy with position on results board.
