Orienteering race 2:10:10 [5] 15.3 km (8:30 / km) +490m 7:20 / km
shoes: Inov8 X-Talon 212 Amber/Silver

ACT Long Distance Champs, 12th, 6,000% behind. Started this well, nailed the first four, lost 30s on #4 with a shoelace, and was in 7th place. This section felt great. Then it all fell apart. Lost about 7min on #5 after drifting in the last 300m and losing contact. Not a very good demonstration of relocation either, I could have minimised the loss much better. Over the next few controls I was feeling pretty vague and not concentrating well; by the time I'd done the climb to #9 I was feeling decidedly light-headed. I'd given up waiting for water (it would have been nice if the first water on the course was earlier than 8km and 52min, which included over 400m climb) to have with a gel and had one up the climb. The gel eventually sorted out my head out when I was on the way to #13. Anyway, pretty much everything after that was survival plod and trying not to trip and trigger a fatal cramp. So it looks like I went out too hard on the climbs and wiped myself out, the mistake at #5 looks a lot like the brain starting to run out of fuel in retrospect, but I also struggled, as usual, in the rocky terrain and deadfall. Not much for it but more long terrain running I guess.

ACT Middle Distance Champs, 12th, 21.3% behind :( I had high expectations and was running okay but I didn't treat the trickier parts of the terrain with the necessary respect and then a really basic error mid-course helped turn this into a pretty crap run. Things started going downhill at #3 when I ran hard and carelessly into the tricky last few hundred metres and wasn't quite where I thought I was. Luckily I relocated of #13 but lost 1:00+. On #10 I was running too fast/without enough focus again and had a brain fail, ending up way off line - another minute. On #14 I couldn't make sense of the detail in the circle and wasted yet another (nearly) minute. Forgot my GPS today so no track unfortunately.

Home from work via Dickson in the pouring rain with a Mona's fartlek of sorts, with the intervals and rests dictated by road crossings. Intervals were 1:35, 1:11, 1:01, 1:08, then into the shops for 15min, then 1:03, 0:41, 31, 32, 34, 31. Floats were sorta equalish but with some standing around rather than running recovery. Pace felt pretty good
