Note

One of the features of Bruce that I (and several others) mentioned was that he gave people the space and the confidence to extend themselves beyond what they might have thought themselves was possible. One example I mentioned was my first foray into journalism, aged 13 - Bruce at the time wrote the orienteering articles for the Canberra Times (he was Orienteering ACT publicity officer) but was unable to make it one weekend and asked me to stand in. In my somewhat biased view, it still reads reasonably well, even if I did give a few too many plugs to relatives and friends (and spelt Darryl Erbacher's name incorrectly).

Run 41:00 [3] 7.1 km (5:46 / km)

It was a long day yesterday and I didn't have the energy to get up early enough to join Louise's planned 6.15 start (I'm not sure how she found the energy to do it either), but set out myself an hour and a half later or thereabouts. It's the first time I've really explored the Launceston waterfront, which has its attractive parts and its less attractive parts (being low tide, the river itself was in its less attractive mode - lots of slimy mud); the climatological pedant in me was somewhat offended by the fact that the positions of the years painted on the flood wall had no evident connection to the highest flood levels in the years concerned (1929 should be easily the highest). Achilles a bit touchy early and a somewhat sluggish run in general.

Set out westwards after dropping my parents off at the airport for a weekend touring some of the more accessible wild bits of Tasmania. Got the timing right for Cradle Mountain, arriving just in time to see the mountain (with fresh snow down to 50-100m above lake level) before it disappeared in a fresh round of snow/sleet showers. Was rushing a bit after that because my route was Waratah-Savage River-Corinna-Zeehan and I had conflicting information about whether the Corinna ferry shut down at 5 or 7, but more relaxed after crossing the river. In Zeehan tonight.
