Pineridge Map - Red Middle Course 4.0 km 175 m climb

I was nervous for this middle course because of my past big errors in this discipline. However, I felt things were different now. The confidence that I so desperately lacked in past years has finally reached a good level, and there are no words to describe how f'ing amazing it feels to not doubt yourself anymore.

This was a new map and new type of terrain that required some getting used to. The ground was very rocky and uneven, slowing down running pace and distracting from map reading. Right away I recalled Sweden and how tough it was to run there, I also recalled Glen Affric (or at least the portion I ran on). I appreciated the opportunity to race here, to practice running on more challenging terrain that I'm used to. Thanks EMPO!

So regarding the race itself:
will update a little later..

Note

I plan to do a more thorough analysis of my US Champs races but for now I will show-off my greatest achievement so far: best split on a tricky leg among red and blue runners on Day 1 course. Hellz ye! Totally nailed that control by 1. picking a good route 2. attacking aggressively from known location, 3. properly understanding vegetation boundary, and 4. not hesitating in the control circle. Now need to rinse and repeat.

South Mtn trail run. Wet and humid out but I didn't care. Altitude definitely impacts me in a positive way, felt great.

Note
(rest day)

This was a great trip that I'm now recovering from. It was done in three stages, involved three different levels of orienteering, challenged me in more than three ways, and presented plenty of opportunity to have a good time with some amazing people. Thanks to Carol, Greg and their cat for providing me a home to stay in, thanks to Desolation Wilderness for not attacking me with bears, and major thanks to Will, his parents and their kitties for opening up their home and making me feel welcome in Seattle.

This is what Will's kittens were up to this weekend. They proceeded to do the same thing once I was inside the sleeping bag :)

Day 2 of SART!

Round 4: Shoreview Park

Now it was time for some not-so-white woods and a lot of climb. Ali, Peteris, and Eric Jones were in my heat with Nikolay not starting. Followed them on the climb from the start through whitish woods, got to the top and lost them shortly thereafter. Came down on trail to #1 and saw Ali hopping on one foot. Unfortunately, she was out :(. I continued on, pushing myself just because I wanted to, just because I felt I could. Coming into #6 I saw Eric Jones behind me, which was a surprise, but then he disappeared fast going to #8. I had a moment of hesitation picking a route to #8. Finally decided on the stadium border + steep hill route, which was Ok but going left, around and actually being able to run uphill probably would have worked better for me. Anyway though, hit #8 no problem and could see Eric somewhere in the green below the control, obviously, not having a blast. I knew I had a chance then to get second place if I finished strong. The last part of the course was something I would like to remember because there was that extra pressure to run fast and the necessity to keep your cool. I managed to do that. Happy with my performance.

Round 5: Shoreview College

And the last round of the tournament! Somehow I managed to sneak in to top 15. Definitely was not expecting to be this high up. I would have liked to battle Tyra in the lower tier but because Ali dropped out, I had to battle Elise, and that was a lost cause. I knew I would end up in 15th place but that didn't stop me from trying to push myself on this last race. This course had many butterfly loops, and I do like those in general but they're tricky, and you have to read ahead well. I did that fine but the map was very detailed, so overall flow of the race was not that smooth. Plus there were people going about every which way. Nevertheless, this was great fun. Some intense finishing of top men followed, so exciting to watch!
Great event by Patrick + team.
