Orienteering 36:00 [5]

Control putting - picking - chase intervals. Tomi started 1:30 and Minna 2:00 after me. RG:
http://www.routegadget.net/gpsoblog/cgi-bin/reitti...

Tomi's route is not loaded yet, will pop up soon.

Interval paces (distance is straight line, not route):

1. 3 controls, 870m 6:34 min/km
2. 3 controls, 795m 6:41 min/km
3. 3 controls, 890m 7:20 min/km
4. 3 controls, 860m 6:52 min/km
5. 3 controls, 880m 7:33 min/km
6. 3 controls, 760m 6:01 min/km

I guess this is not so bad pace for a control putting in a terrain like this.

Minna injured/bent her little finger and had to stop after 3 intervals. Hopefully there is nothing broken.

Running 22:33 [4] 5.9 km (3:49 / km)

My regular 6k test run, 22:33.

One kilometer before finish in a downhill I thought I was running pretty fast (sub 4 min/km), but then saw someone running _much_ faster (maybe sub 3min/km?) same hill up - a very thin young man with big ears in VeVe suit. I immediately felt like snail compared to him and kind of lost my motivation to try too hard any more and ended up 24 sec behind the best time 2006. I can't figure out who he was, he wasn't any of these veve faces I see regulary around here.

Legs were stiff after all the night running in snow. Hamstring didn't like 3:20 pace or faster (lungns either), but 3:30 pace was tolerable. If this stiffness does not disappear soon, I will have to consider stretching :(

(rest day)

Take a look at these maps. Those are parts of Jukola and Venla relay legs 2005 and 2006. Course is overlayed on a map with all controls. Usually you don't see maps like this unless you are course setter. If you take any O-ringen map with all controls and any course, it will look a lot like this.

Am I the only one who can se similarity between this and the m?rco format Norvegians are still trying to develope?

Most top athletes are not against this Jukola / O-ringen style course settings. I guess most love it. But most of them hate micro/macro thing. Question 1: What is the big difference?

Question 2: Would you hate this format as much as micro/macro:

You can read more about these macro plans from Tore Sandvik's blog:

Note

A funny picture from Finnish ski-o champs yesterday (if I got it right).

Orienteering 1:35:00 [3]

With Tomi and Minna, near by terrain (15-20 min drive from home). Course was planned in a way all started with different part of the course, put first 7 contols, passed next 7 and picked up last 7. Plus I had some extra contols (blue circles). Legs we were supposed to put or pick were connected with purple color, the rest with blue. Each 7 control section had diffrent streamer colors, I put orangeones, passed blue ones and picked red one.

Quite a change. As you might have already guessed I didn't plan this training. My lazy planning method has been lately grab-a-random-map-with-old-course-on-it-and-just-run-it.

All these nice color codes were too much for poor Tomi who started picking red ones instead of orange until he realized it and left all red streamers at a control. I was supposed to pick red one, and I was a bit confused why I can't find any. But it was fun. RG

Orienteering (night) 39:20 [4]

A D21 middle distance course Minna ran last summer. Lost 4 min to Minna and 11 min to winner, Vroni. Yes, it was terrible weather (rain - something between sonw and water), very dark, snow halfway to knee in some or most places, no flags or reflectors, but it doesn't change the fact Minna was one min/km faster than me. Damn!

Orienteering (night) 1:20:00 [3] 8.5 km (9:25 / km)

Night o training in a near by terrain RG . GE. Dark, icy, slippery, snowy, with crashing trought the ice to knee deep cold water, despair ... in other words perfect night O training. I even broke my compass on my way to #4, navigated rest of the course without one. I belived many times beeing lost, but controls keeped popping up (actually there wasn't any controls - I usually practise without flags - so right places kept appearing).

Navigating skills are far too over valued. All you need is pure raw luck! I wonder if this is how Pasi does it?

Added also RG for night o I did three days ago.

Quite funny - today is the last voting day, and my SI posting seem to have got 60% of votes so far. I need a battery carrier for my new HID, maybe I should start checking what are the options there ;)

Orienteering (night) 1:20:00 [3]

At Luukki (north), almost all controls were big stones. It's good to have clear control points if you dont have anys flag of reflectors in forest. 20% was snowless, mostly there was ankle deep snow or more. First time out with my new 950 lumens HID.

Running with it was a lot like running with my old 20W halogen with fresh battery. The light was just a bit, or a lot, brighter. And it really is still night O, brighter light does not turn it to day O.

I liked this lamp. And it wasn't too bright, I didn't have trouble with the brightness, but in these snowy conditions I wouldn't like to have any brighter light. Snow was already almost too bright. I guess it wil work even better without all the white snow.

But it is the only HID I have run with, I can compare it only with my 20W halogen.

It burned a bit over 2 hours with 2700 mAH nimh battery.

EDIT: This was an old course, I ran this 2-3 years ago. I couldn't remember much. I guess there is certain advatages in beeing old and a bit senile: you will soon forget your trainings and you can do same nice and fun courses over and over again. The disadvantage is you will never learn anything. But if it's fun, who cares.

About e-punch issue. I am very pleased to see there is people out there who can kind of understand my reasoning and thinks the main parts in the same way I do.

I have got comments fom WOC winners af every dicipline but trail O (foot-O, MTB-O, Ski-O) and people who have been resposible for making results for several Jukola and Fin 5 events. And no-one has yet said I have got it all wrong.

You can criticize me for beeing openly aganist SI. And it's true, SI problems were the trigger for me to tohink where we are and where we are going to. But while thinking the reasons behind SI issues I have noticed Emit share same of SI weaknesses, and Emit has it's own ones. SI criticism can not be taken seriously and will lead nowhere, if you don't admit Emit has it's own weaknesses and they share many of them.

International O community deservers better systems.

Today's map.
O map from Helsinki 1981. I think I was 10 years old at that time, but already 5 years of orienteering training behind. Started well, but boomed #4 and #6 miserably. I can remember much, but I do remember how I was booming #6, standing on bare rock hill and looking at the view to the city and thinking there's too much buildings and cars, it can be down there.

I picked this map because I noticed I was mentioned elsewhere in a same sentence with Tero and Mats. It really should not happen, unless I am mentioned as an opposite example. Like here I could say about my race 25 years ago "I started with huge speed, a bit like Mats, spiked first three contols like Tero, but then something happenned and the rest of my race got badly Jagged."

Today's map.
A near by map. This is closest we can get to Uppsala's Lunsen. Similar area isn't big, but I could feel the similarity while running in Uppsala. One of my favourite night-o training terrains.

Note

I didn't get much response about my Finnish posting about SI. The response was basicly "yeah, we know it ain't no any good and it should not be used. Tell us something we dont already know". Well, then I wrote why Emit isn't any good and why it shouldn't be used, and described how epuch system should work with some quite unorthodox conclusion. And that helped, now heat is on. So far there is alredy very interesting opinions from at least two world champions and for exmaple a guy who has done results for several last Jukola relays. Let's see how it goes, it may have to skip 2007 season and move to US or Australia...

I checked yesterday what I wrote in Finnish and noticed I really didn't mention all SI flaws and design errors as well as I should. So I had to write a bit more :-) I also wrote a bit my thoughts about ideal epunch system and tried to desrcibe it a bit. I'll write the same here in English in near future.

Note

Three days ago I wrote here some facts about SportIdent. I posted similar badly written whining to a Finnish orienteering forum. Now they seem to have picked it up and now it's #1 candidate for getting the posting of the month award (20 euros)! Too bad I didn't know it would turn like his, I would have written it a bit better way with more facts and better examples. The other candidates are written in a much better way, like O analysis article about Jani Lakanen and an article about discontinuing of the Finnish orienteering realy league. But I am not suprised if my posting gets some votes, lots of Finnish orienteers think the same way I do about SI. They are here used to run fair races and they are not used to accept questionable results. So Don't think I am just a weird fellow who alone dislikes SI and likes to kill the "cancer" before it grows ;) Actually I am a conservative one, I am not running for organizing boycotts for SI events like some more unorthodox people suggest every year.
