Note

Topo - age 5 months - talks a lot these days, but I am not sure do I understand everything correctly. For example after last night's head lamp run he used words

"head", "bone", "moon", "hazel-grouse" and "adder"

(Finnish words "pää", "luu", "kuu", "pyy", "kyy").

What do you think that was about?

Orienteering 1:50:00 intensity: (50:00 @2) + (1:00:00 @3)

11.7 km, time 1:50, GPS distance 15.0 km. Course by ndobbs.
Dot map without controls.
http://routegadget.awardspace.com/dotmaps/sorvalam...
Shows how slow I was.

I started later than planned and darkness was near. To #1 Maybe more straing or more about, can't tell. Paths and marches were flooding, snow has melted and it has been raining last couple of days, so going around on march was not se attractive alternative. To #2 I took paths, maybe took couple of unnecessary contors there. #3-4 no surprises. #5 was in the middle ofclearing. Also new clearing on the way to #7. To #8 I considered for a while going around to avoid those houses but decided to go straight anyway. #9 first signs of getting tired, had to walk the halfway hill up. -#15 nothing special, except fun. #16 I took around route via the edge of the Havremossen. I have never run that edge of the march before, there was some sort of unmapped trail. I guess it was a good choice. #17 I was getting tired and it was gettng dark, so route alternatve was obvious for me. #18 right for no reason, well, from road to #17 was crappy and I did not want to go trough it twice. #20 just tried to spot the right cliff, #21 went high enough to see the march. #21, first celar mistake. I found path and tought its the one I was waiting, But no, it was the more early one, so I ended up on that bare rock hill. From there I tried to navigate straight but I did not do that well, I had big bubblein my compass and north arrow was pointing in random directions and that means a heavy compass user like mee also runs to random directions. But even if I ran sometimes too much left and sometime too much right I ended up hitting the control just fine. #22 left, for n reason. I think I though I'd avoid some crappy stuff by doing it but I must have seen wrong. It was difficult to see map, it was quite dark already. #23 followed telephone / e-line to not get lost. And there was path too. Should have left it a bit more early, forest was fast around there. #24, funny route choice, avoided all paths but used road. I think I was not as bad as it may look. #24 - Finish, night orienteering without headlamp. How in a world such a head lamp geek as me can end up doing night orienteering wihtout a headlamp?

Great terrain and really great course. I did not look any route choices in advance, I'd never be able to do such a training by planning course by myself. Now I had to pick one route choice alternative and hope it's fine (and had to think in the back of my head I dhould have taken the other route). Excellent stuff! Thanks, not a bad course, especially if this was done 3 am after hard day at work.

Note

The other day I was sitting a bit too close to our laptop with Topo. He managed to do his first ever google search. Result was full of ZZ Top. Coincidence? I was not sure, so when MinnaR was away we listened ZZ top's Tejas album. And as usual, ZZ top led to Lynyrd Skynyrd (Swamp music made me wonder what kind of music Swampfox plays with his guitar) and after Skynyrds version of Call Me The Breeze we ended up listening JJ Cale. And there it was, Topo's new favourite song. Enjoy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QtJrOz-urWA

During yesterdays run my cell phone lost network for 9 minutes. My dot must have dissappered during live, but looks like my changes made the trick because all data were sent to server as soon as network was back. Good news for Yökuppi 2010.

Trail running (Night) 1:11:00 [2]

Head lamp run. It looks like gps can make parallel error too.

Eneloops were great. I did not recharge them, I just soldered pack and ran. Cell were manufactured november 2008, so after one year they still had more then enough charge for 1 hour head lamp run. Traditional nimh pack is usually quite empty after few months, if not after few weeks/days. I guess now I don't have to recharge my pack right before every run, instead I can recharge it right after every run. So I'll be able to just grab my lamp and go without having to plan it 4 hours before and remeber to recharge.

Roasted one pair of eyes. Maybe it was rabbit, maybe not. It climbed up to a tree. Can rabbits climb? Also a dog and a dogwalker, male I think. Difficult to say afterwards what they used to be before roasting. Also almost roasted MinnaR and Topo before I took off. I need to be more carefull in future.

Finnish time 18:45 -> head lamp run live tracking (in 45 minutes). Using now enhanged version of the phone client app. Hopefully now there will be no annoying gaps. There may be some breaks in live stream if cell phone networks fails, but the data should find their way to the server in the end. Let's see how it goes.

Orienteering 1:58:00 intensity: (18:00 @2) + (1:00:00 @3) + (40:00 @4) 11.25 km (10:29 / km)

http://www.routegadget.net/tracker/cgi-bin/reitti....

Course by BorisGr, 11.25 km (straigh line from control to control, measured with google earth), 31 controls.

Tehre was couple of inches (old) snow in forest and that + blueberry made it a bit tough. To make it in time I tried to keep decent pace right from the beginning and soon found myself working about as hard as I could. I had nice flow during first 90 minutes but after getting it dissappeared, I understood nothig, could not read map, did not see, and barely could move. Luckily there was path alternative to #29, that kind of saved me from having to walk too much.

Parallel mistake to #3, new road went over #12 and it was difficult to get it really was the stone 1 meter from the road, spiked #13 but could not identify the spot rigth away, sliped a bit low halfway to #17. At #18 I realised I will be dead meat soon and picked path route with less climb to #19. There was new road again (same road byt the way) and I ran it, that's why I went as I went. Sorlampi was flooding, thats why I went around all marches by that lake. From 21 to 23 was torture and I was pretty much done at #23. Decided to jog at the bottom of the valley and then climb stringh up to #24, but cliff looked so steep and slippery I ended up climbing safer way up and ended up making ugly huge S. Maybe I should have taken different route, but not sure, I dont think there is any good alternatives there for a tired man. At #28 I was ready to call it a day, but the path route to #29 saved me from skipping last controls.

Nice tough course. There is several legs I still don't know what is the best route chouce. And there was also several you should not go just straight and also some legs you should leave control to an other direction that straight to next one. I am absolutely sure I would not have bothered to plan as good course for myself.

Km pace 10:30 hmm, sofa potato.

Some gaps in tracing, I should fix that, planned to do it for long itme but never got to it. Maybe tomorrow.

Orienteering (Night) 1:13:00 [3]

Night O, course by BorisGr. Thanks for the course setting!

http://www.routegadget.net/tracker/cgi-bin/reitti....
http://routegadget.awardspace.com/dotmaps/20091108...

I began to recharge battery too late, so I had proper light for about 30 minutes. At the end (after one hour) I didn't see much. Most of the snow was melted but there was lots af water everywhere, some paths was just sort of rivers.

I had some trouble finding some tiny stones in the dark with my dimmed lamp, but biggest search was when I still had decent light. There was just too many unmapped stones and too many fallen trees and I guess never saw the rigth one. Or I did - difficult to say. It was nice outing anyway, but next time with recharged battery.

This was supposed to be some sort of retr-O, becaus the map was so old. here new version of the same area:http://www.espoonsuunta.fi/reitti/gadget/cgi-bin/r...

So dim lamp was just fine, halogen would have been better and some non halogen hot wire the best. As you can see, those stones I was searching lomgest are not mapped at all :)

Kuivannon kymppi, 10.6 km road race at Kuivanto, Orimattila. Started maybe too far back, so I had to pass people to get to the place I could run in peace. So first 4 km were not much of racing, just cruising and taking short spurts to pass groups of people for fun. I took easily 4-8 km gravel road section, too bumpy for Topo at pram. Last 2.5 km harder, 9th km is slow because there was big uphill and pram makes uphills more slow and tough than one might imagine. Pos 58 out og about 500 runners. Not bad I guess. Fun day, -2C sunshine.

Topo's first race. He was brave and slept all the time.

I have run this once before, then my time was 39 and something.
