Intrigued by Ambit Run 3, currently available at deep discount, esp. after Kevin indicated he had a work around for lack of a straightforward appear-as-usb function.

Forgot to switch out of Ultra Trac.

Rain rendered glasses useless from 6-10, and let us note my biggest error was missing #8 perhaps a little low. I rely on terrain viewing at the end of my range and I lose that, even thought I'm only like 20/40 20/50, and it jacks me up. Still, I should have been able to do it. Also my route may have sucked, try to cut down to the lower trails instead of going the longer but flatter way around, which is usually not my m.o.

Quick swipe of some early controls in the best part of the map.

Ludington until my watch died. More details later.

Note: the ole' refurb fenix will not even make 9 hours in ultra trac, time to look at other options.

~~

Recruited Tizoc, Cataldo, and Brad Streu for Ludington. My suspicion was that Brad was WAAAAY fitter than me and T might have more than Cris, so we opted for a two-pack strategy that was I think effective in maximizing speed.

I promised Cris we'd be in the bottom 1/3rd two minutes into the race and finish in the top ten. She said it was wild to watch it happen. Even I'm not entirely sure how we got ahead of so many teams during the opening trek - there was very little jogging.

Our nav was not dialed yesterday. Thankfully, it's not reflected in the tracks or splits. I missed my saddle leaving 3, but we recovered and just added a wee more climb. We also had trouble in the final trek dealing with the wildly changing perspective of distance between slow and fast terrain, that gave us fits and near mutiny going west between the top two points.

Our best move came when Tizoc got worked a bit on the first climb away from the river and said, "no more elevation change". I said, "I got you, fam" and we took the way speedier Barothy Road route, which got us to catch MRA to their surprise. Naturally, they immediately hauled past.

7th of 55, about ~40 minutes behind first.

Room for improvement:
1. MY FITNESS
2. MY WEIGHT

10. I think I under utilized Cris - she is a planning / logistics genius. Also should have had her track pace/distance when sensible.
11. We missed the part of the briefing where we got the direction for the final bike o bingo which was +10-15 minutes, ARGH. I have to be more ready before Mark's starts, even if that means getting up an hour earlier I think to avoid unnecessary briefing departures.
12. TAs were too slow. I should be more helpful once I'm ready, but also define expectations/goals I think.

Especially for having never raced together before, the team crushed it. Very good people, don't hesitate to race with any of 'em.

Showering before awards sure was nice. If that's not reason enough to get in shape, I'm not sure what will be.

Note

Daughter has a camp near Erie, PA the same weekend as the Green Corn Moon Rogaine. Wife will already be in Petoskey for a wedding, so it could be game on....if I can find out how to minimize the vacation by finding a spot to sit Friday for eight hours with wifi....it would sort of not be completely inconvenient. In 2018, this seems pretty straightforward as there might be a place to chill in Pittsburgh....
