Note

Pleased with 10th, last year my best result was 11th (in M40, with JL sitting it out), but it was a real missed opportunity today, in good health I would certainly have run better with more focus and aggression, 6th was a real possibility

also pleased to see I was 5th on the long leg (10) and also on another pure running leg (16), matched Martin Ward from there to the finish

1 PM

Orienteering race 32:22 [4] 3.9 km (8:18 / km) +170m 6:49 / km
slept:6.0 (sick) shoes: Inov8 Oroc 340

British Middle Champs, Stanton Moor
this had been my big target this year (it's so close to home), so very frustrating to get a heavy cold the week before, ran okay, in the end, but it was so hard to get going, it was as if I had to break through a barrier, and with it came the sweat, could've been a stunning result had I been healthy, then there were the two mistakes:

8) 'contoured' using the track that had been created, but it took us low and I laboured upwards I overshot and zig-zagged to the flag (60secs)

11) a little hestitant, but visited the right control, only to misread the code and move on, fortunately, I came back to it (50-60secs)

10th, 6mins behind JL, would be more pleased had I not been pipped by club rival Andy Sykes (1sec)(and 2secs by Kenny Leitch)

getting there, but will I still be around next year?

11 AM

Orienteering race 15:53 [5] 2.3 km (6:54 / km) +30m 6:29 / km
shoes: Saucony Peregrine

British Sprint Champs Loughborough, Qualifier
still in the grip of the cold, couldn't get the body up to speed before the start and just didn't 'fire', ran the course in a kind of fog, missed qualification by only 6 secs, but with Charlie not competing should've made it comfortably with a clean run, or a pacier one:

5) planned the big route choice ahead, but missed the turning and made a big banana back around the control (30-40secs)

16) tiny leg but didn't spot the flag (6+ secs)

20) somehow I couldn't spot the distinctive tree and ran on to the next one ... I think I was expecting it to be standing alone, instead of connecting with another distinctive tree (20secs)

a decent run would've been 14:40 - still half a minuted short of Dai Bedwell of DVO, I have a new rival

2 PM

Orienteering race 13:57 [5] 2.0 km (6:59 / km) +30m 6:29 / km
shoes: Saucony Peregrine

British Sprint Champs, B Final
better, not so much fog, a little more pace, very dry throat, but only one mistake and finished 2secs behind Nigel Bunn for 2nd, if I'd beaten him that would've been a consolation

5) they broke the over-print to show a non-gap? the uncrossable fence didn't appear thick enough and I interpreted the line break and the line on the map as crossable, but it certainly wasn't crossable, then I compounded the problem by dashing left to another uncrossable gap (20-30secs)

apart from that fairly good flow through the course

2nd, 2secs behind Nigel Bunn

Note
slept:8.5 (sick) (rest day)

very deep voice this morning

5 PM

Mapping 1:15:00 [0] 1.5 km (50:00 / km) +15m 47:37 / km

sun was shining and a walk in the woods couldn't do me any harm so I went up to finish the last sections of Farley, apart from the quarry, mostly grot with tiny unpredictable patches of mature pine forest

Thursday Apr 18, 2013 #

Note
slept:6.5 (sick) (rest day)

plenty of cold, more than enough to go around, I'll leave some by the front door

Wednesday Apr 17, 2013 #

Note
(sick) (rest day)

more cold

3 PM

Mapping 1:30:00 [0] 2.0 km (45:00 / km) +15m 43:22 / km
(sick)

as the sun was shining, thought some fresh air and a short mapping session would do me good, only a few sections of Farley remaining so I want to keep chipping away, felt okay, but there so many rhodendron thickets in there I didn't finish

Note
(sick) (rest day)

sore throat, snot, creaking bones: cold

2 PM

Mapping 2:30:00 [0] 4.0 km (37:30 / km) +10m 37:02 / km

two hours in light to mid green uncovering rocks and dot knolls, fun, and a sunny afternoon too, one large similar section with less features remaining, plus two grotty bits, and ... the quarry

bit of a cold again, felt very dehydrated all afternoon, so took some lucozade with me

6 PM

running 1:27:18 [3] 14.0 km (6:14 / km) +605m 5:08 / km
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

Monyash, Magpie Mine, Great Shacklow Wood, Sheldon
very nice run over the top, lovely views and all fairly gentle, until you've worked your way through to the far side of Shacklow and your faced wit an 80m climb in less than 150m

didn't know how I'd handle this because the 'cold' has returned and I felt very dehydrated all afternoon, but after a rough start it went okay, and not too slow today
