dusting the cobwebs off on anna's green hammond pond course. pressed start/stop instead of lap once, so the map splits/CP marks are jacked up. quarter good, half okay, quarter crap. happy with just over 10min/straightline k all things considered (10:14). ian absolutely murdered this one. looks like magnus forgot to download his splits from the ambulance after dislocating his shoulder. it would have been nice to see how badly i was beating him. not as badly as he was beating himself, it seems.

1) crap out of the gates. kneed a rock on the drive part of a stride then skinned my palm, all while taking a stupid low route because i misread two contours. (0:30, if not more)
2) missed my turn, okay job recovering off the handy stone wall (1:30)
3) first decent leg of the year. successfully used the use-terrain-handrails knowledge PG dropped on me at NAOCs.
4) okay, little north of the pin (0:15)
5) driven too south by veg-dodging out of 4, and then lured off by a parallel pair of boulders. took far too long to smarten up (1:45)
6) tried to use the broad(!) flat re-entrant at the end as a guide. not so smart. little wandery at the pin (0:15)
7) good until the end - underestimated how far north of the stone wall the flag was, thought i would see it, slightly overran it (0:15)
8) if you think you've overrun something at hammond pond, you have. the woods feel like what you'd find on a 1:10 map and lull the intuition. tried planning two legs ahead and sailed past my boulder on the map to the next. watch was stopped (0:45)
9) solid leg up until the end. thought i was on the parallel trail fork/rock set to the east, wasn't (0:15)
10) swampy, fighty, sluggish, but nothing technical to blame it on (0:30)
11) plowed through the rough with a little more 'tude than 4-5, solid leg. coulda gotten ian.
12) drilled it. saw jon soo and used him for motivation. also coulda gotten ian
13) ditto
14) second worst leg, trying to bury jon. took the wrong trail off the road, went to the wrong hilltop. took a cantilevered log across the 5ft wide stream. correctly figured the log was strong enough, incorrectly figured it would stay cantilevered. (1:00)
15) meh. nothing offensive, just meh. (0:15)
16) ok. had drifted slightly west, but saw the feature and angled in.
17) didn't read ahead, too much thinking for a short leg
18) worst leg. shitty bearing out of 17, went right past it, bounced off 17, went right past it, random search, found it nestled snugly between two rocks (1:30)
19) dropped the hammer, ended up just barely east of it.
F) zoom! tried make a tree-assisted corner and tore the damn thing down. nearly dropped it (3" diameter, 20' tall) on a family starting their white course. beat ian!

left an easy 8:45 out there. enough to barely beat Bo. some day!

still need to get in touch with the berman's about fixing my thumpass. the NEOC rental had a bubble the size of a jumbo jet. smacked the needle around like a housecat playing with a mouse.

jogging the orange backwards to find sarah to tell her about magnus. fun exercise, orienteering like you're trying to find someone running the other way. reminded me about that thierry gueorgiou article about visibility and orienteering.

Cycling 20:00 [3] 3.7 mi (5:24 / mi)

last leg of the work/nate's/home car/motorcycle/bike triangle trade. it's probably three days of rest talking, but it felt surprisingly easy - maybe running is helping. wore my fancy new windproof booties (plastic bags), and they worked perfectly. i recommend the TJ's model over the CVS ones.

had a physical a few days back. asked if my (minor) heart murmur has any effect on running (or vice versa), and she asked if i've ever had an echocardiogram. i haven't, and so now i'm lined up for one next week. i've always been jealous of the people who get a DVD with the MRI of their knee/brain/etc, and i'm told i can get the ECG results on disk. score! also, passed out after getting blood drawn. can't say i'm afraid of needles, so no idea what's up there. hadn't eaten since the previous night, though.
