Note

a little investigation into the bill pullman index - or trying to glean insight from regular aussie stompings. with mountains of evidence pointing to his being fitter and smarter and, uh, more experienced than i, it's no surprise he's frequently at the top. the thing that surprises me are his drastically shorter route distances. not so surprising overall, but the magnitude really highlights the downside of getting thoroughly lost.

so, without futher ado:

my weak html-fu can't get that center tag working. anyway, glad i got my nerd on. that list goes all the way back to my second meet ever - and my pace, on whatever misguided line i've chosen that day, is getting closer to his - almost equal today. if i were smarter on route choice - and saying i left room for improvement is putting it kindly - i might even be able to reel him in. either way, time to change the strategy to something other than 'slower and stupider'

semi-decent orienteering - almost without a huge miss, almost. pretty happy, consider the lingering cough continuing to linger. the higher heartrates are probably a mix of long road legs and reduced lung function. lot of wet out there, fair bit of stealth-green, and a pile of unmapped (and convenient) trails. thinking i probably could've shaved 10-12 minutes off with a little more competence and maybe going all bulldozer on some marshier bits.

forgot my clue holder thing, taped the sheet right to my arm. tape held up fine, but the sweat soaked paper cashed out by control 4. i actually like it much, much more than the clue holder - maybe i'll just laminate the clues first.

also, it seems like i'm only twelve points behind Ian for the NEOC M21+ club championship, which is just silly. totally a byproduct of him organizing so many courses, and me logging 11 meets to his 7. Even sillier is that i've got two points on Ross, from over twice as many meets. my only hope for a completely illegitimate championship is if Ian doesn't make it to the sprints somehow. i mean, accidents do happen, y'know?

1) did well, but didn't have the hatrack warmed up yet - a little hesitant across the stream. then straight in (+0:20)
2) the first of many unmapped trails provided and handy linkup. crossed a log made of peanut butter. little confused leaving the road (+0:20)
3) a stupid map fold hid the obvious route choice - spent a little while fighting wet while angling north around the water. finished strong (+2:00)
4) first 2/3rds were solid. sold myself on apparently promising unmapped trails - cheated too far west and went low (+2:10)
5) killed it. best split
6) kept choosing the left option around wetness while not tracking the rapidly accumulating error. boo-urns (+3:20)
7) woo trail running.
8) obligatory disaster. lots of wet - some seriously underwater yellow. first plan proved damp, thought a different route out of 7 would be good, wasn't, then fought around the marsh. found some dumps of rusty metal and broken glass - no-fall orienteering for real. more accumulated eastery drift - not so much orienteering as bulldozing at this point. i'll go with AP's estimated: (+9:20)
9) pissed off and took it out on the underbrush. first plan was to take the road almost all the way, but i was bored while running and read the map some more - saw the trail network and followed it in. botched it at the end where the trails meet the stone wall, then cut the wrong way down the cliff. (+1:20)
10) shot a little right (+30)
11) zoom! would've been second on red, even. beat ian!
