Orienteering race 1:55:55 [3] 6.41 km (18:05 / km) +221m 15:25 / km
shoes: Icebugs

Did the Green at Paugussett. Excellent weather, temp about 75F. Jim and Rich apparently cloned the courses used in 2015(?).

My route.

Nominal through 3, then headed in the wrong direction for 3 minutes before figuring that out. Before approaching the control I apparently had the (folded) map upside down to check exit azimuth. Lesson: unfold the map before previewing exit azimuth.

Turned south, crossed trail, climbed up to level area and found unmapped but very well trodden trail at the break in the wall. Saw Nellie to my left, surprised because he started almost 2 minutes before I did. We crept southward and Charlie showed up. We all confessed to being lost. I picked my way east to view marsh down below, figured I needed to go west and north. That worked, found 4 before N and C did.

Picked my way slowly through the technical area I've experienced and gotten lost in years ago and succeeded in finding trail southward. Found 5 without problem. To 6 I avoided climb by heading a bit south of azimuth but got too hesitant as I was correcting northward. Saw big climb to north and figured if I circled e. and n. around it the reentrant would lead me in. Yes!

On toward 7 I got too cute after finding trail, thought I'd short cut and keep n. of the hill. Bad idea. When I regained the trail I was beyond the westward trail I expected to turn w on to. Went blank, didn't realize the marsh to the n. was the one I passed on the leg to 2 and expected to key off of to find 8. Thus I was too far north and was bushwacking to 7.

I thought my compass was taking me to the marsh s.e. of 8, but I came upon the trail further n, thus running n I ended up at the junction, had to turn back s.e. Misread the clue and expected the flag at 8 to be at the bottom of the cliff, not the top.

Nominal to 9, 10 and F. Made my goal to beat 2 hours in a venue that has alway befuddled me.

Note

Not three minutes ago we saw mama bear (tagged) and two teenager children right in front of our kitchen window. They saw the garage door was closed. So they moved rapidly to the south southwest and disappeared through the woods. Good riddance.
