Orienteering race 1:14:54 [3] 5.59 mi (13:24 / mi)
shoes: Icebugs

Did the Green course at Sessions. My route.

A straight forward course with controls hung high and visible through the north half of Sessions. The area has been hit by a myriad of new trails, undoubtedly by bikes, which adds confusion for O. But the area is relatively open for those who run. I walked most of the time but tried jogging on open levels or downhills.

Heavy breathing on the climb from 2 to 3 since I'm pretty much out of shape. Took a small detour to verify 9 on my way to 3. On the way to 7 wanted to avoid the climb and went around to the right, thinking the trail would be easy enough to pick up since it is, well, used to be, the main well-trodden N/S path in that area. That cost me because of the new bike trails going every which way and it wasn't clear to me at all which was the old trail. I should have proceeded straight over the two contour mesa (I ended up there anyway without knowing where I was) and rely on contours and compass from there, ignoring the unmapped web of trails. For some reason I always have difficulty finding that huge oak tree (No. 7), even though I have myself hung controls there. On way to 9 I passed by 3 for a secure waypoint. Skirted the now maturing clearcut area on way to 10 because I suspect that area would be slow and have lots of ankle twisters. Can't explain why the iPhone recorded me in a zig zag climbing up to the field on way to 11 -- I may have been huffing and puffing but I wasn't staggering!

Probably my best time on a course of this length (4.4 crow-flying km).

Golf 2:30:00 [3] 2.0 km (1:15:00 / km)

First golf this year. Simsbury Farms. Started as I did last year. Excellent on the first 1 1/2 holes, wretched after that. First hole: better drive than all last year, second shot on the green, 3 putt for bogie (got par last year). Great drive on 2 and the rest was barf-o-rama. Did have 6 or 7 pleasing shots before finishing at No. 9. But I wasn't out there for golf - just wanted the diversion and fellowship, which was provided in great measure. Could not have had better weather and temperature.

After lunch, headed straight for Dick's and got new golf shoes. My toes will thank me.

Note

Two friends of Susan came by with elegant lunch in lieu of the trio's usual day long excursion to celebrate each others' birthday. That freed me up to explore the outdoors. Went out to Five Ponds in Litchfield/Morris and had an excellent stroll. Spent so long there I abandoned the plan to go explore Kent and instead grabbed some takeout in Torrington to enjoy sitting over the Farmington River at People's SP. Along the way, discovered and viewed the ritzy lakeside homes on Woodbridge Lake in Goshen. Suprizingly tastefully done for a modern real estate development.
