Orienteering 1:30:00 [3] 10.0 km (9:00 / km)
shoes: Inov8 X-Talon 212s

SOL on Dunalastair, Brown course. As if it got worse from yesterday... Garmin died so guess of time and distance. I have genuinely forgotten how to orienteer. Too low on 1 but not too bad. Bad direction out of 1 meant I reached the fence between the two crossing points. Intended to go to the left one and still did that despite the right one being the better choice after where I ended up. Then again bad direction after the crossing point. Ran down the hill when I should have been flat and as a result had to climb a long way up the power lines. Lost maybe 2.5 mins total. 3 I got distracted. Heading the right way when I saw a control off to my right and so I ran too it only to find it wasn't mine. Then bad direction out of 3 causing me to be miles away from the crossing point over the stream so I had to loop back to it. No strength through the forest to 4 so lost more time. Next few legs were okayish just again didn't feel like I was moving at any speed. 11 I ran straight off the end of the ride and so again did another unnecessary loop. 13 was horrific. Basically just ran in a rough direction and didn't look at anything. Ended up on the slope predictably with no idea whereabouts i was. Walked up and down for a bit until i relocated off the fence corner well above and to the east of 13. Eventually got there after 20+ minutes. At this point I'd already been out 83 (winner did like 75) so i retired. Can't remember having such a bad w/e of orienteering in my life.

Note

Personal analysis. 1. Obviously have no fitness. 2. I don't look at my compass often enough and so I think i'm going to buy a thumb compass. Hopefully might help if its on the map all the time.

Orienteering race 1:24:14 [3] 9.53 km (8:50 / km)

Schiehallion w/e day 2. WRE middle race. Well er... Started off badly to be fair. Direction was really poor to 4 after crossing the wall. I ran into the huge green bit above the control and for whatever reason couldn't work out i was in it. Wandered around for a bit before going back to the crossing point. Set off again and got to the right area but still couldn't find it as i was too high. The vegetation just didn't seem to make sense. Lost like 10 minutes. Missed 5 as i was again too high through poor direction. Mark caught me 12 minutes going to 6. Tried to keep up for a bit. I took a lower line down the hill to 7 at which point my shoes decided to collapse. The sole completely came off and i was left to hobble to the control (still beat Mark there). Made it to 8 before i decided i wasn't going to finish the course with my shoe like this. Went back to assembly and borrowed Alasdair Pedley's shoes and then headed out to 9 again (as you do). Very little motivation and the rest was essentially a jog. Actually few mistakes but when you're going at the pace i was that wasn't hard. Managed to finish 3rd last so a solid result.

Note

Hello again. Exams over so I'm a free man once more. They went okayish but I'm just hoping to forget about it until results day. Aiming to start running regularly with the aim of having some level of fitness for summer. Plenty of o'ing happening once again; Oringen, coaching at Lagganlia, S6D's and Gothenburg. Very little running has happened in the past month as demonstrated by today...

Orienteering race 17:19 [4] 3.97 km (4:22 / km)
shoes: New Balance trainers

Bannockburn WRE Sprint race. Took my Garmin (naughty, naughty) so the distance is accurate. I'm incredibly slow aren't I? My nav was overall pretty good. Few slips where I just overshot a junction and had to turn back or ran down the wrong alley briefly. Nailed the long leg. Planned ahead well and knew my route (left, the better route) before I'd got to the control and so flowed through well. Finished a minuteish down on virtually everyone purely because I'm slow. Comparing with Alasdair pedley who took the slow route on the long leg I only took 10 seconds out of him because of how much faster he was... Proper o tomorrow hopefully I'll be a bit better .
