Running 1:00:13 [3] 12.1 km (4:59 / km)
shoes: Inov8 X-Talons 212's (04/16)

Last run in Norway before leaving this afternoon. Nice run around some trails with Will while Olly ran ahead doing his Monday Raz.

Sunday Jun 26, 2016 #

Running warm up/down 4:36 [2] 0.83 km (5:33 / km)
shoes: Inov8 X-Talons 212's (04/16)

Up.

Orienteering race 59:15 [3] 5.79 km (10:14 / km)
shoes: Inov8 X-Talons 212's (04/16)

O Fest middle. Started well again and was clean and fast until 4. Missed 5 by about 2 minutes just from not concentrating leaving 4. Missed 6 even worse. Was stood about 50 meters from the control for about 5 or 6 minutes trying to work out where I was. After this I knew the race was over and struggled to get any motivation for the rest so it was essentially a jog/walk. Still wasn't concentrating and missed a few later on. Just not my day.

Running warm up/down 12:59 [2] 1.72 km (7:33 / km)
shoes: Inov8 X-Talons 212's (04/16)

Up and down. Running around a bit to sort emit brikke and EmiTag.

Orienteering 45:35 [3] 5.51 km (8:16 / km)
shoes: Inov8 X-Talons 212's (04/16)

O Fest Long. Started well up until 5. Nav was pretty decent. On the way to 6 just died and began walking through everything and made a stupid mistake towards the end of the leg. Wasn't feeling fantastic at the start and could probably tell that this would happen. May have been due to a lack of sleep as a similar thing happened to Will. Retired just before I reached 6. Was also awful hot and that probably didn't help. Had I carried on I'd have probably had a decent result as everyone seemed to be dead slow #BonkyP

Cycling 30:00 [1]

Into Halden to buy a few things, around a bit and back. Failed on getting a fresh trim, again.

Running warm up/down 8:46 [2] 1.55 km (5:39 / km)
shoes: Inov8 X-Talons 212's (04/16)

Up and down.

Orienteering race 15:46 [4] 3.85 km (4:06 / km)
shoes: Inov8 X-Talons 212's (04/16)

O Fest Sprint. Made a couple of bad routes and was slower than everyone else. Lost a minute through routes maybe.

Running long 1:17:02 [3] 14.1 km (5:28 / km)
shoes: Inov8 X-Talons 212's (04/16)

Went out for a 30-40 minute run. Ended up getting lost in the forest and losing my sense of direction. Thankfully I found a map just as I was about to run off in the opposite direction to where I should have been going. Then got lost again coming out of the woods into Halden. Thought I'd come out so that Hakon's house was to my left and it turned out to be on my right. Spent 30 minutes running round the local residential streets until I thankfully came out right next to the house. My route looks most interesting - https://www.strava.com/activities/618254423

Running warm up/down 5:54 [2] 1.0 km (5:54 / km)
shoes: Inov8 X-Talons 212's (04/16)

Orienteering 1:19:08 [3] 8.09 km (9:47 / km)
shoes: Inov8 X-Talons 212's (04/16)

Halden O Intervals on Furumokasene. 6 x about 1 km. Nav was fairly solid however the filthy Norwegian skog reduced me to a crawl at times. So unbelievably slow. I was warned this before hand so kind of to be expected. These training sessions are so good. Full live tracking provided which allowed the ever keen Timmy to follow me live while I was being binned by Tove from his hovel back in England.

And of course you can see for yourself how slow you were afterwards -

(3rd one I went 15, 9, 10, 14 while Mark did it properly)

Note

Done with Finland and now onto a week in Norway. Staying in Alex's mate Hakon's house until Friday and then doing O-Festivalen at the weekend.
12 PM

Running warm up/down 12:03 [2] 1.96 km (6:09 / km)
shoes: Inov8 X-Talons 212's (04/16)

Jog out with Hakon and jog back afterwards.

Orienteering 36:25 [3] 4.56 km (7:59 / km)
shoes: Inov8 X-Talons 212's (04/16)

Slow and badly around an ok area that was near Hakon's house. I'm a complete punter I've decided.
6 PM

Running warm up/down 42:28 [3] 7.94 km (5:21 / km)

Run out to the track and a bit of a warm up (pressured into actually warming up this time) and then a run back, all uphill.

Running race 9:55 [5] 3.0 km (3:18 / km)

Halden's 3k test race. My first ever 3k and race on a track as well. Think I did alright I don't really know. Managed to take Purko with about 700m to go which was nice I guess. Probably not quite at my fastest with Jukola, the boat and the lack of sleep because of them.

Orienteering race 2:04:11 [4] 19.01 km (6:32 / km)
shoes: VJ Supra's

Jukola Leg 7 for EUOC. Started out without really thinking too much as I was basically following a huge track through a bit of dirty forest. Followed said track for too long and overshot #1 and ended up at the wrong gaffle but relocated okay. Lost 2 minutes. Took a round route to #4 which I'm not sure about. Picked the best route to #5 and executed it well so pleased with that. Felt like I was running well at this point and I think I caught a small group of people around #6. Missed #8 to the right and was pretty unsure of where I was exactly losing a minute probably. Didn't take the best route on #10, straighter and slightly south of the line was faster but my route wasn't too bad and again executed it well. Really didn't fancy the green on the way to #12 so took a round route on a track which I don't think turned out to be too bad. Missed #15 as I became very unsure as to what I was doing approaching the circle and stopped way to short and was very slow into it so lost 1 min. Blindly followed someone to their #17 having already got mine. Started to bonk coming out of #22 and lost 2 minutes on #23 through just being tired and taking a bad route much too far to the right. Olli Ojanaho came right through me at #26, no way I had the energy to even try and keep with him. Went to the wrong gaffle at #29, really tired at this point and struggling to think straight. Missed #30 to the left after bad compass and similar on #32 but going right this time. Okay into the finish. Overall fairly pleased with the run. Nav was fairly decent for the most part but just suffered as I tired towards the end. Jukola was an amazing experience and I am very keen to come out again next year only hopefully it won't be quite so wet next time. Team EUOC finished in 166th and I was 193rd on the leg.

Orienteering 1:02:12 [3] 7.04 km (8:50 / km)
shoes: Inov8 X-Talons 212's (04/16)

Middle course. Pretty bad start and middle, okay finish. I follow my compass too loosely, I look at it and it's not pointing the right way but I don't do much about it which is stupid.

Running warm up/down 3:41 [2] 0.65 km (5:40 / km)
shoes: Inov8 X-Talons 212's (04/16)

To from start and finish.

Note

Been a pretty good week so far. Think I've found an okay balance to training and not killing myself for Sunday morning. Heading up to the arena on Saturday and am quite excited :)

Note
(rest day)

Minging weather, drove out to an area to run around but decided against doing it, couldn't face the rain unlike the superior male to me that is Tam Wilson.

Orienteering 1:49:16 [3] 12.35 km (8:51 / km)
shoes: Inov8 X-Talons 212's (04/16)

Long course from the club hut. Orienteered okay for most of it actually. Lost 5 minutes at 7 after it was the first control without a tag so I was in the right place initially but wondered round until I ended up in the same place. Okay for the rest. Very nice bit of forest.

Running warm up/down 12:10 [2] 2.38 km (5:07 / km)
shoes: Inov8 X-Talons 212's (04/16)

To the start and from the finish of the long course.

Orienteering 55:01 [3] 7.19 km (7:39 / km)
shoes: Inov8 X-Talons 212's (04/16)

Mass start thing with a local club. Supposed to be a forked course but in reality it was just everyone with different courses. Really bad midway to the end having started okay.

Running warm up/down 13:55 [2] 2.29 km (6:05 / km)
shoes: Inov8 X-Talons 212's (04/16)

To and from the start and finish of the mass start thing.

Running 31:56 [3] 4.81 km (6:38 / km)
shoes: Inov8 X-Talons 212's (04/16)

Morning run around the lake. Gorgeous forest.

Orienteering 1:25:03 [3] 8.91 km (9:33 / km)
shoes: Inov8 X-Talons 212's (04/16)

Local event. Started okay, was within 10m of 2 for 5 minutes, big mistakes later on, cruised the end. Not a good start.

Monday Jun 13, 2016 #

Note
(rest day)

Flight to Helsinki delayed by 6 hours which ment no time to do anything sadly. Could have done some night-o but too tired after a pretty long day.

Sunday Jun 12, 2016 #

Orienteering race 46:40 [4] 6.8 km (6:52 / km)
shoes: Inov8 X-Talons 212's (04/16)

Made some mistakes at the start but still managed to catch a pack of Felly, Ali and Paul at 7 despite losing probably 5 minutes up to here. Caught by Tim at 8 and proceded to pretty much blindly follow him for most of the course as he was flying and it was all I could do to hang on. We made a big miss at 21 maybe and then I tried to do my own thing to 22 and made a mistake again. Shouldn't have bothered haha. Finished 5th after everyone else had equally bad runs except Andy and joe so fair play to them.

Orienteering race 16:12 [5] 3.76 km (4:19 / km)
shoes: Asics trainers

Quali. Not good, bad routes on an easy course. To be fair the A final would still have been hard even with a perfect run, too easy a course for me.

Orienteering race 15:58 [5] 3.67 km (4:21 / km)
shoes: Asics trainers

Final. Not great either, better than the morning but still some bad routes and hesitant in places too. Still not fast enough tbh.

Running warm up/down 5:29 [2] 1.01 km (5:26 / km)
shoes: Asics trainers

Running to the starts.

Note

Had a bit of a break recently. Few gentle runs later this week maybe before the sprint/middle this w/e and then a couple of tough weeks in Finland/Norway for Jukola and O-Fest! Pretty excited but also praying I've sorted everything for Jukola okay...

Orienteering race 22:51 [5] 5.44 km (4:12 / km)
shoes: Asics trainers

Yorkshire Sprint Champs - Prologue. Good run apart from #6 where I'd started looking ahead too early and went in the first gap of the wall I saw and ran around in the wrong bit of semi-open for a bit. Wasn't helped by the fact I clearly wasn't the first to do it as the area was long grass and filled with elephant tracks. Still though, 30 seconds lost. Tiring towards the end and losing places. Probably due to it being a longer race than I thought it would and starting too hard.

Orienteering race 18:07 [5] 4.27 km (4:15 / km)
shoes: Asics trainers

Yorkshire Sprint Champs - Final. Solid run again. Few dodgy route choices but I feel as though a couple are just unavoidable as you think its a 50/50 so pick one and then it turns out the other was slightly shorter. Again tiring towards the end and losing places on winsplits.

Orienteering race 1:23:24 [3] 13.01 km (6:25 / km)
shoes: Inov8 X-Talons 212's (04/16)

CSC qualifier. Slow and hard work most of the way around. Few small mistake but mostly due to the bilberries being waist high. It may have looked nice but it was certainly not nice to 'run' through. Spent the whole time thinking about #HoldTheDoor for some bizarre reason. Always seem to do that, think about some strange topic when I really should be thinking about navigating hmm. SYO qualified so all good. I actually ended up getting 96 points as I was beaten by a few trophy runners who don't knock you down.
