CSC Heat, Tentsmuir - Brown.
Had a weirdly large amount of nerves build up for this, I guess because it's the first race coming into the ones that matter so wanted to see where I'm at. New it would have to be a hard, grim one but tried to just let it happen rather than force the pace. Strange first control and then settled into it, just trying to be solid through the first few. The controls were all on easy features so it was mostly just about having a plan and making sure exit direction was good. By the time I got to the first long one I was in a nice rythmn and trying quite hard. Decided to just bash it round the paths which I continued to do for most of tha race, but never felt completely comfortable with this. As it happens it seems like this was the best option so that's good. It was much of the same for the vast majority of legs, just making sure I had the exit sorted and the circle sorted, with not a lot else to do in between other than make it hurt a little. Caught sight of Felly (3mins) coming into 8 but took until 10/11 to actually catch him. More pathing on the secong long one but this time the legs were starting to suffer. Suddenly lost confidence coming into this one, thought maybe I wasn't on the path I thought I was. In reality that would have been a difficult mistake to make but it was a good reminder that had to keep the focus. Terrain was tougher into the next controls and really had to force myself to keep it going. Biggest time loss of the race at 18 (~30ecs) where I saw the tick on the contour so read it that way and so when it was completly the opposite I thought maybe my direction had been terrible. Bad mapping in my opinion but surprised no one else had the same issue. Continued on, caught sight of Euzie heading in to 25 so thought I'd catch him but poor picture on 26 meant I wobbled and lost ~20secs. Surprised to see Felly not too far behind at this point so tried to get the tempo going on the last long one and into the finish. The second half really was quite grim.
Pleasing performance even if it was rather simple. Pleased to see things coming together, seem to be able to get into a good level of focus at the moment which is something I want to continue into the selection races, I think perhaps by taking a slightly more relaxed approach. Most of the work is done, so just let things play out.

Seemed to have Bash's pace for the most part but not as strong towards the end.

Mass start relay training at the Wallace Monument. Found a reasonable amount of focus and orienteered ok, making sure I had a plan and good direction out of every control. Few minor slip ups and went to the wrong gaffle on one of them so had to go back to mine but feeling ok physically and came back around 20secs down on Bash.

Note

Went to bed with a bit of a sore throat, woke with headache / sore throat / bunged up. Not too bad but enough to at least postpone run until tonight. This is definitely due to standing outside all afternoon in a practical doing not a lot more than getting cold. Very frustrating.
5 PM

Running 25:23 [2] 5.11 km (4:58 / km) +26m 4:51 / km
shoes: Nike Zoom Elite 7 (2)

Overdosing on fruit throughout the day meant I was feeling tired but ok when I got back from uni. Took bloody ages to get out the door but had left my laptop charger in the depths of the JCMB and it needed rescuing. Successful mission despite the buildings best attempts to lock me out.
Feeling tired so absolute minimal tonight.

4 sprintervals kindly planned by Tam. Focus not quite there. Struggled to see the good routes in Pollock and be decisive. Improved a bit on the second but struggled for intensity on the third. Mass start on the fourth helped but still didn't feel like I had a good enough picture of the options available. Execution also felt a little stop start. Final moan: wasn't in that mindset where you're really pushing hard out of corners etc.

Did a lap before the long run then another with the others before Ali and I headed off for a decent b&b run. Very pleasant apart from a little storm towards the end. Legs felt tired to begin with but improved nicely.

Did the hills early to be able to go to the carnethy talk later. Meant that all I had to eat or drink before this was a smoothie after drills and an energy bar just before. Really wasn't looking forward to it but the first three went by quite quickly. Died a bit on fifth and sixth but mostly ok. Pleased to get it done.
