Was looking forward to a fast race with some technical difficulty. Pre race i was focusing on finding clear AP's and checking the compass constantly as I knew it was going to be vague.
On the way to number one i was a bit unsure as to how to truly attack the control but was relieved when i came out into some open forest and decided that the vegetation was quite clear so i found it fine. #2 should be a very simple control but i can't have checked my compass as much or as well as i thought i was and ended up drifting too far north and made a parallel error that confused me and cost 10mins.
Obviously this was very frustrating and demorilising but i tried to keep running. on the way to three i saw nathan, who had started 4mins behind me, punching #5. I lost about 2mins on 3 as well from being a bit unsure. The next two were also poor compass work and i lost time.
6 was fine and so was 7 (fasted split) and 8, 9 and 10 with my compass improving considerably. 11 i was a bit hesitant but nothing major, and 12 was the same but probably a little more. 16 i dont think i trusted my route choice truly and wasn't fully attacking.
overall a poor performance, but i was pleased with a lot of the course and really enjoyed being racing again. I'm glad i kept on pushing despite knowing in the back of my mind a good result was out of the window. Hopefully this will be my one bad run of the year, luckily it didn't mean much. The main thing i learned is my compass needs work, but there's plenty of time to sort that out.
