Prologue
Set off well; first three controls fine (although contour detail around #2 appeared simplified). Got to the vicinity of #4 without too much difficulty but didn't spot flag tucked away and decided it wasn't there... returned just in time to show the chasing Embrey (2mins) where it was... [75]
Lesson 1: if confident in position do a through check before trying to relocate.
#5 headed off without any composure; took poorer route initially then ended up hacking through grot... [20]
Lesson 2: if caught by other runners do not change approach - keep calm.
#7 poor direction to start leg, then again once leaving forest road [120]
Lesson 3: you have a compass. Use it.
#9 all the unmapped ditches made for slow progress - would have been quicker to return to path [15]
#10 caught again, but stayed ahead with better lines for a bit.
#12 'Clever' line through green not so clever... [70]
Lesson 4: do not be afraid of taking the same route as others if it is the best choice.
Slow into the finish.
Lesson 5: do not give up, no matter how badly you think you are doing!
Lessons nothing new but perhaps writing them down will help reinforce them, who knows!
Ended up a very poor 10th, 8 minutes behind Embrey... about the same as I was a few weeks ago over 11.1km in the dark at the BNC...
