Orienteering (Catoctin blue) 2:16:38 [3] 7.7 km (17:45 / km) +495m 13:26 / km
ahr:134 max:159 shoes: Falcons 2018

Very steep course on largely unfinished map. Overall contours are good but some of small details are missing. None of the rocky areas are mapped which can be quite slow going. Lots of down debris. Generally, very slow terrain. We started at the bottom this time rather than the long walk up the hill.
Since there was no water on the course I wore my camel back which did impact my ability to duck under things.
I was doing fine up through control 10. Leg to 11 wasn't pleasant. Straight line take you across 600 meters of stony ground that was over grown in places. Twice I had to back track to find a way through. I went through 40 meters of poison ivy growing amount the rocks so you can use your hands for balance. The final area around the control was an area where the fine contours didn't show up. Translation, there really wasn't anything to navigate it by once you got close. I though I knew where I was but was wrong. I was getting ready to bail out the 200m to the road when I saw a control. I turned out to be mine but I couldn't say if it was in the correct spot or not.
I had a late start so was running out of time before the course closed. I decided I could make it (but was late) so kept going. Next control took us into the unmapped rock area. I was high and had to bounce off another control. It would have helped to know what size rock we were looking for in the unmapped boulder area.
The rest of the controls were generally ok, but slow.
It was good to get into the woods. I haven't been real orienteering for a long time (some summer training and mapping during covid but nothing serious). I did a lot of walking today because of the climb and rock but did try to keep moving.
