Orienteering (happyland-red) 1:06:33 [3] 7.7 km (8:39 / km) +275m 7:20 / km

I was tired from yesterday. That plus this is the green happyland map I decided to do red. A good decision. I had several controls when I lost significant time wandering in the green "white" woods looking for a control.
Peggy didn't want me to run her down so she let me start first.
For the first control I am standing at the dtich where I expect to see the control but there isn't a control. Since I had already relocated one on my way here I thought maybe I was still off. While I am trying to find out where I could be since there is not control, I hear a epunch beep from behind me. Jon Pifer had just punched the control. I still couldn't see the control but I could see Jon. Sure enough, tucked into the debris was the control. I had run right by it.
Going to 2 I was a little off- green kept forcing me wide. I was a little unsure where I was and then saw a control. It was number three. From there it was back to 2 and right back to three.
Control 4 I spent a long time in the mapped and unmapped green looking for a ditch. I apparently went right be the control and just kept going. I found 3-4 unmapped ditched in the green which would have been very nice to relocate but since they weren't on the map. After finding the control I decided the ditch threshold must be deeper than I would use. Later ditches proved this to not be the case. They were just unmapped ditches. Peggy and Corinne there just ahead of me.
I lost time going to 5. I made excellent time leaving 4 since I had already been there and new how to avoid the unmapped green. As I got close to 5 I hit a significant ditch. I relocated then hit another dtich that meant I clearly wasn't were I suppose to be. At this point I floundered as at least one or more of the ditches wasn't on the map. I finally just went back to my original heading and eventually hit some reentrants. At this point since everytime I tried to read any features on the map I got screwed I stopped reading features and just used contours. I was off but cut over to the control. Peggy was there ahead of me.
So now I decided to just read contours. Going to 6, I stayed high instead of running around as I am sure everyone else did. I wanted to be able to clearly see the hills which is why I did this. Apparently the control was easy from the other way. I was doing fine until near the control. The last stream I was to cross didn't exist (at least where I crossed it. i ignored the unmapped ditches. Where I expected to see the control (lookng for a spur was just one long ridge). I ran along the side of the ridge and didn' t see it. Finally hit the road, cut back in and still didn't see anything like a spur. I made a broad circle and hit the trail. Took the trail back to the road. Pace counted down the road and cut in. This time I got on top of the ridge and lo and behold, there were water jugs (still no control). Finally got to the water jugs and there was a control hung very low. What was still missing was the spur. It was just the same long ridge I had been at before.
At this point, all incentive (not that there was much to begin with) is gone. I walked a lot more and didn't push it. I was also really tired, physically and of the green. It was very difficult to go in a straight line. On the way to 7 I saw Peggy again. i thought she must have screwed up also to still be looking for 6. Although I didn't realize it, She was on her way to 9 and ahead of me.
I did manage to catch back up to her. On the long leg at the end I took the road all the way around and just beat Peggy there. Heidi was there also and almost overshot the control.
Joged in staying high to avoid the lower green. Passed Corinne again as she walked up the hill while I toughed it out and kept running. Running paid off as I beat Peggy by 3 seconds.
