Other (XC skiing) 1:00:00 [3] 2.5 mi (24:00 / mi)
Decided not to pass up the opportunity to go skiing with all the snow. I went on the "trails" behind my house. Trails is in quotes because they are not very trail like currently.
The snow is more compacted now so you don't sink a foot +. Now it is a reasonable 2/3 inches. There is a 1/2 mile'ish loop behind my house and I decided to do that. It is fairly flat with only two little hills. The first part is a general down hill and the second part is gradual up hill.
I started off ok but the trail had a lot of down fall on it. The first loop I moved several large broken branches off the trail. I stopped the watch while moving braches aside. Skiing was tough as there were down trees. Some I had to go around, others I could step/ski over. The first loop was slow going as I was making the trail (literally) and getting a feel for it.
My skiing was nothing like they were doing at the olympics. On TV they are on wide groomed trails without a chance of hitting a tree much less having to ski over one. I had to constantly change direction which made it hard to get a rythym going. I also doubt the olympians have evey got stuck in green briar while skiing like I did.
I fell once in the second loop (going down the little hill) and realized just how deep the snow was. My arrm sunk all the way in and I had a tough time getting out to where I could even sit up. Later loops I skied into the woods to avoid falling.
1:50 (front of house to the trails)
13:58 (first loop, very slow).
11:30 (2nd loop, Include fall time).
10:01 (3rd loop, I am getting the hang of this, actually gliding now)
9:03 (4th loop, Hey, I am actually skiing).
13:43 (Skied up the other way to see what the possiblities are for later skiing. Had to make my trail again.
