Run race (Symphony of lights) 19:36 [5] 5.0 km (3:55 / km)
shoes: Brooks Adrenaline 2007
The big race. The only running race I actually race in. Held in Clinton iowa in Eagle Point park, it is a rolling hill 5 K road race. Being a smaller race I usually place well.
Once again this year, the turnout seems to be lower. It seems to get smaller and smaller every year. Oh well, that just makes it easier for me.
Valerie Meyer was there again this year and we were picking out the likely leaders.
It was chilly again in the 30's right at dusk so getting colder. I was thinking about wearing lighter weight running clothes but changed my mind during warm up. I thought I would be warm but during the race I was actually cold. My hands never really warmed up and head was chilly. I guess cutting my hair short wasn't good for cold weather.
I started off strong and was actually leading. Not unusual as I usually start of fast. What was unusual was this time the "true" leaders didn't pass me. I was leaving room for the leader to pass me but he didn't. I ran for about 1/3 mile in first until the guy finally passed me. As usual, I did start out too fast which wasn't a problem until I ran out of air and had to start breathing. Settled into a comfortable place about 1/2 mile in when the up hill started. I was in 3rd place. at .75 miles in a young kid who looked like he was going to fast and another person passed me. Ok, I am in 5th now. Went through the mile marker at 5:58. I expected to be about 6:00 and didn't want to be slower than 6:20 so I was ok. The young kid was fading so I passed him quickly on the uphill. Back to fourth. The 3rd place guiy was moving faster so I just let him go. I ran the last 2 miles pretty much all by myself so I tried to just settled into a comfortable pace and keep moving. 2nd mile was 6:15. Good, still faster than the 6:20. Just had to hold on for a little more than a mile. The course loops back on itself in several places so you can see who is coming up from behind. I had a good gap in front and behind. The last part I was starting to fade and the person behind me was slowly gaining but I wasn't worried as I had a large lead. Finished strong but could have been faster if someone had pushed me. Finished 4th and first in the M40 age group. The guy behind me was 2nd in the M40 age group.
5:58 6:15 6:30 :59 The last mile is estimated as they didn't have a 3rd mile marker.
