I had a great master plan. I was going to do the right side of the map. Unfortunately, after the start I got my maps mixed up and ran the right side of the left map. I went to flip the map over and realized I had done the map. My route was far from optimum. I was over a mile to next control and by then I was getting tired. I totally died on the farthest part of the map. I figured I could just take an slow walk in but I was getting dehydrated (despite having carried all the water I could) and walking was getting harder and harder. I took a break for about 15 minutes at control when Tom came walking up. He was moving slow also. We did the next few controls together. Up hills were very slow.
I was 7.75 miles in in 3.3 hours, it took me over 2 hours to get back at that point (3.25 miles). By the end I couldn't walk at all. I had to rest a few minutes to get 50 meters.
I had to spend several hours after the race recovering.
