Orienteering 1:47:00 intensity: (20:00 @1) + (1:27:00 @5)

Swiss classic champs up on Klausenpass.
Suprisingly I had pretty good legs, but my head was not focused... too many mistakes. That I forgot my magnifier didn't help on that super terrain. It was really cool to run there.
I finished 5th, 4min30sec behind Baptiste who won.

Pikes Peak Marathon.
I think I have never heard that many "you are awesome" in my whole life as in the last mile of the race... hard not to get a complex :-). It is nice to experience American's excitement for sport performances.
I tried to run hard the ascend and then I took the descend a bit easier... but it was long enough that my legs were hurting quite a bit anyway.
The uphill running felt good, and I was able to push hard on the last part of the race. But I am somewhat disappointed that I missed to beat my time from 2010. Comparing my splits with the guys who did the ascent the day before, I started off too slowly... and was very fast at the end. From A-frame to the summit I was 1min50 faster then the winner, but overall I lost 2min50.
The marathon time is probably respectable, as since Matt Carpenter's era no one has achieved to run it in that speed... eventhough I am light-year away from his record of 1993 in 3hr16!!!

A big thanks to Christoph and Beatrice who made it up to A-frame and the summit to give me great support there.

Interval training up Quandary Peak (4300m high). Ran twice the last climb (13200ft to 14100ft) to get some extra training in altitude. Felt hard.
Did 4x4min on the first ascend. For the second ascent I was too tired that it would have been smart to push again.

Strength workout, body we 20:00 [1]

Need a rest day!
We are spending a couple of days in Breckenridge. What a fun town and cool environment... tons of trails which make my feet feel very itchy.

US Classic Champs Day 2.
I pushed hard in the beginning. My body asked for special masochistic motivation as I was feeling pretty worn out to keep the pace up in the fast first half of the course. And I got pretty badly tricked. On my way out of #12 I run 30° off for 400m before correcting it (but not noticing that I was running wrong). I continue for about 1km in the right direction but parallel to where I thought I would be, thinking I must be really stupid not to find out where I am. Finally, I am able to relocate, after running blindly for 4 minutes. I am so shocked about my position that I decide to go back to the former control to make sure I punshed the right one. After running back 1km I get confirmed that I had punshed the right #12... and that's how I got to do an extra 2km. I pulled myself again together for the rest of the course, but I was enough tired that I continuously had troubles with the direction... which is anyway very tricky to keep in that terrain.

I will take home another strong memory from that race... it was a tough fight against the terrain and myself... and a very tight fight with Mikell Platt who I beat by ridiculous 6 seconds. What an amazing athlete! Truly an admirable O-cowboy.

Thanks to the RMOC crew for putting up those unique races. I really enjoyed the attractive special terrain, the good course setting and the very familiar race atmosphere.

Run with Matti 40:00 [1] 6.0 km (6:40 / km)

Ran the Trail O with Matti. I thought it was very cool... but Matti fell asleep. So I continued running until I was just too exhausted. Fortunately Mikell and Sandra joined me to help me pushing Matti around.

Orienteering 1:25:11 intensity: (25:00 @1) + (1:00:11 @5) 16.93 km (5:02 / km) +365m 4:32 / km

US Classic Champs day #1 in Round Mountain.
Very clean run. Pushed hard and maintained clean orienteering throughout the course. What a cool terrain... technically you always have to be on top of it and physically it is ridiculously hard. You can push 120% the whole way but your mind needs to remain attentive to avoid mistakes (small but also big ones... see day 2...).

Pikes Peak Ascend. I had about 2hr32 without breaks from the Trail head. Man it is loong and hard! I have definitely even more respect now for the race than before. I felt that the hardest part was between Bare Camp and A-frame. It climbs and climbs, your are already very tired but you are still in the forest and you can't see the summit and your progress.

Note

Driving from Mount massive Trail head to Colorado Springs.
On the way we stop at Round Mountain to do the model event of the Classic Champs. The terrain is that fast that Matti and I punch half the controls with the stroller.

Ran up Mount Massive. I got so excited that on the final climb I decide to run 2x10min fast. It turned out to be more like a 10min-8min and 6min interval as I lost several times the trail.
This is for sure the first time I have been doing interval training above 4000m altitude.
In my euphoria I crashed pretty hard on my way down... no bad injury though, but I was lucky.

Tough day for me. Hamstring pain on the downhill and (mental?) bonking.

I planed to do flat intervals along Dillon lake shore. But I made the mistake to have my last meal in Whole Foods and had to throw up after 3x5min... this organic stuff is dangerous for your stomach... or maybe the 2 coffees after the meal?!?

Laramie Daze #1.
Finally a dream becomes true and we are taking part in those legendary races. Already the first touch wasn't a disappointment. Probably one of my most exotic orienteering experiences... I felt like Luky Luke running through the highlands.
Thanks Mikell to making this possible!!!
