Long Run 10:51:00 [3] 50.3 mi (12:57 / mi)

Silver Rush 50 2017 - 93 overall and 81 male. Nearly 8000 feet of gain. 514 outbound and 537 inbound. I'm not sure about the distances with the new course since it is not a true outbound anymore. It got very hot the last two hours. I ran conservatively and was in the top 200 at the first aid station at 13.5. I was taking a Gu every 30 min and drinking a lot of water. I was peeing a lot the first 4.5 hours, but the last half only peed once. My quads were getting a little trashed on the downhill around mile 30-34 and I tried really hard to conserve them and pour water on them to cool them off but they eventually got trashed on the final 10 mile stretch. I think in the heat from mile 35 on I got a little lazy with my nutrition. I was still taking in calories but probably only 100-150 per hour and with the heat I think I convinced myself this was a better idea but it wasn't. I also hike really hard up the last climb to 12000 after mile 37.5 thinking I could still break my record of 10:06, but to no avail. That extra effort caused me to not be able to run hard on the downhill. I still was able to run most of the downhill the last 10 miles, but had to take walk breaks. The last 2 miles was almost all walking. It was also discouraging because I lost contact with other runners the last 7 miles. I would say that over the second half of the race though, I was passed by maybe 5-10 people, so I was proud about that. I also took salt all day and tried really hard to keep my hat and bandana really wet at all creek crossings. I am always amazed but most people who don't do this. It takes 5 seconds! I never sat down or stopped for more than 1 minute at any aid station. I only had to visit the woods one time and that helped a lot. Funny, today we are still in Leadville and the clouds are in and it is raining a bit. If I would have had those temps yesterday I guarantee I would have taken a half hour off. Oh well, that is why they run the races. I am proud of the effort.
