Orienteering race 1:02:05 [5] 5.0 km (12:25 / km) +105m 11:14 / km

Day 1 of Boulder Dash @ Bear Brook SP

Not a great race... so many places where I should have slowed and paid more attention to the map but I didn't. Tried to take a compass bearing through the green to #1 which didn't really work out, I stopped too soon and was bouncing from rock to rock to try to find the right one. Clearly I didn't really learn from that though because I did the same thing- do a bearing and hope to get lucky- on #3 so that wasn't very good. #6 was also notably bad, a control in depression right after a nice patch of green. I actually was trying to be more careful on this one-- ran east so I could have the river in my sight. My plan was to keep that in view and then notice the rootstocks and then find the control right after that, but I got lazy, drifted west from the stream and suddenly I was in an area full of reentrants and knolls and ended up just running around for a while until I saw someone else going into the control.
#7 was another big mistake, decided to go out to the road because I was tired of running through the green forest... but my route out to the road was both inefficent and very green so that wasn't very fast. Definitely should have just taken the trail run; looking back, can't imagine why I didn't just do that in the first place.
