today was a mixed bag but in the end fall orienteering is just too wonderful not to leave a positive impression on my spirit.
#5 something happens to you mentally when a control is not where it's supposed to be...you don't trust anything after that. after i couldn't find 5, when it was obviously not where it was supposed to be (read robert hesketh's log) i decided to move on and just get some training/good workout, thinking that surely the results would not count.
#7 i then had trouble on another control, completely missing a trail because the entrance was covered by a downed tree. my big mistake was not realizing it for a very long time, because i was thinking well it's probably not my fault since the other control was messed up. but then i realized it was my fault, and spent 43 minutes on one control. i could have given up, but it was so beautiful out, and i thought surely these results won't count so what's the difference? and i got through the rest of the course, taking 7 miles and nearly 2.5 hours to do it.
in the end, i think i need to not care about any results, especially this year's dvoa rankings, and just enjoy orienteering. when i wasn't worrying about results, i had a better time. i love the fall, and i feel lucky that i get to go orienteering at all. even though it wasn't 'perfect' i still had a great day in the woods, and am thankful that we have volunteers that spend their time putting events on that i can participate in.
(Ps thanks for not giving me a zero, DVOA results master!!)
