Orienteering 1:44:12 [4] 3.89 mi (26:47 / mi) +896ft 22:00 / mi
shoes: Salomon Speedcross 3 - Blue

Hay Creek Green

1-puff puff, up the hill, to bend in trail, bearing to platform
2-to intersection of ditches, then bearing to platform
3-to bend in trail, bottom of rocky field, boulder, bearing to platform
4-flub to wrong trail, to boulder next to trail, bearing to platform...lost some time here

5-really happy with myself on this one, though i wasn't moving fast, i took the 'through' route, crossing off boulders on the way. getting the control right on was a good feeling.

6-a little flub not knowing where i was on trail, lost some time, then found intermittent trail and ran to end of spur. this was where i saw rob w (and i led him to control)

7-trails to somewhere between boulder and intermittent trail, bearing to reentrant. (rob w and i arrived at same time from difft directions)

8-huge, heartbreaking flub: leaving 7 all i was thinking was 'beat rob, there's not much left to go' and decided to try for the trail to the north which was not my original plan. never found trail but did manage to get super confused in the green and start panicking a little as i decided to just 'head for the sky' where it seemed open. this took longer and was more painful than i thought. i was literally saying 'dear god, please show me the way out." ;) came to dwelling and navigated from there to trails and got back on track but then trails were not behaving and i found myself in someone's backyard. oops. that was OOB. wasn't sure exactly where i was, and my brain was not working, so i just headed into the development to get solid (in retrospect if i had just kept going on the larger trail i could have figured it out.) found my way out and got the control finally. told ed i was OOB and he didn't seem to care re DQing me - it's not like i gained any advantage by doing so. argh. was having a pretty good run up until this point.

9-10 easy and i pushed to get in fast.

all in all, a nice day out with POPS on father's day! glad he did so well today. i feel good about (mostly) successfully navigating feature to feature on a nice, new map...that was really a pleasure to have! this felt like 'real' orienteering in nice woods today where we haven't had that in a while.

oh--and some really nice scout leader offered to give me piggy back rides over the creek crossings on the way to the start! really reminds me of the times when i was little and didn't want to orienteer and made my dad do the same thing! :)

Lunchtime 15 min walk, will do everyday. Helps offset the sitting all day. But not really AP worthy...
