Orienteering race 1:55:25 [4] 4.61 mi (25:02 / mi) +823ft 21:25 / mi
weight:114.8lbs shoes: Salomon Speedcross 3

FCE 1:15 Green

Start - 9
FCE Green 2013 S-9

#1 - Had some troubles here. The plan was to follow the intermittent trail NW, take a right on the trail going E. Never found that 2nd trail, came to baptism creek but thought it was the smaller water, crossed over to verify which stream/creek. Saw Lauren Steiner here who was still looking for #1 too and she had started 10 min before me or so. Didn't come to another creek so crossed back over South, and went east along the creek in what seemed to be a clearer part of the woods, looking for lots of rocks to my north or right side. Got lucky and found it.

2 and 3 okay.

#4 and #5, Twilight Zone. Number 4 was good - went north on the small trail, and E on the big trail, with the plan to head in at the more obvious kink in the trail, just to be sure. Turns out there was an Orange course control right at the charcoal terrace, so aimed off from there and found #4 quickly. Headed off to #5...or did I? I don't really know what happened here, I think I took a bearing from #3 to #5 or something...ended up wandering around for a while trying to relocate from various features, without luck. Finally found #4 again and then questioned whether I had punched it...so I punched it again! :) Headed off quickly to #5, Got it, but my split from 4-5 was 19:42, so I guess it registered the first punch. Hahaha.

5-6 no prob
6-7 Didn't trust my ability to hold a bearing without many features to look at, so I went to the trail to the west. Of course halfway there, I remembered the scale and thought, Dumb Idea, but I had to commit to my choice at that point. Went back in at the bend in the trail. Did not save time by doing this, but was sure of myself so that's good I guess!

7-8 I really poured on the speed here and had a ball running through the woods. (Downhill of course!) Ran to trail just South of junction, aimed off from junction. Easy to spot this as there were people gathered around the water stop. I poured some water on my head, in my mouth, took an energy gel. Turns out I won this split! Woo hoo!

8-9 fine

FCE Green 2013 9-F

9-10 This should have been a fast one, being all trails, but it was uphill and I was really running out of gas. I just couldn't run! This is where some better conditioning would have paid off. Went in from the trail just a few paces after the bend.

10-11 Found myself in a herd of a few people for this one, they were to my left a ways and the plan was just to stay on a bearing and pace count. This is where I came upon Hughmac3, very surprised to see him as he'd left a good bit before me. He was searching for the same control. My bearing was good, just a little north, but within sightline.

11-12 Blast to trail, leave trail at small bend and go into the green. Distracted by a few others right behind me, didn't pay as close attention to my bearing and ended up too far south - but saw them find it and caught up.

12-13 Really HARD going though the rocks and down the steep hill. With the herd, but found it first. :)

13-14 Tried to stay east of the rocks and point a little to the east of the trail junction. The rest of the herd went much farther to the right of me, it made me question myself a little, but when I came out of the woods I was right where I wanted to be and shot down the trail to get the control. Yee haw!

All in all, a hard course, I had some fun running in the woods and also made some pretty big mistakes. This is one of the events I'm just glad to have finished! French Creek is awesome in a lot of places and it's just too bad about all the weirdness from the fire. It must have been very hard to set courses here!

Casual walk around town with my friend Mandy from work.
Stopped by Dad's house and he showed me his new weed removing tool - a sickle on the end of a long pole that he made himself. Genius!!
