Orienteering race 1:33:04 [4] 4.48 mi (20:47 / mi) +184ft 20:00 / mi
weight:114.2lbs shoes: Salomon Speedcross 3

Green Course, Norristown Farm Park. Good workout, good training, not great performance in the heat. Mistakes abounded and I was too tired to run a lot of the time. The creeks were the saving grace of my course!

#2 - Fields were up to my armpits! Went into the woods too soon, yes I saw Dima going in and I thought 'he must know what he's doing,' but he didn't. Stupid to follow anyone especially when my intuition was right.
#3 - Ended up on the wrong trail, that ended, had to go back a bit.
#7 - Thought it looked too green going right over the train tracks, so I went North to cross the bridge and guess what, bridge was closed. The red Xs on the map were very hard to see in my sweaty state. Had to come back down and cross about where I had been.
#8 I was slightly discombulated leaving #7, so I went South all the way down to the road instead of West, up the trail to the East of the creek like I was planning. Took me a minute to realize what I had done when my compass wasn't lining up. Duh. Then it was just a really slow trek along the road, boring and very hot and my lack of conditioning started showing badly here. I have gotten out of shape!!!! Did a forced march with some jogging when I could.
#9 Took the road up to the edge of the planted field and ran along the field edge, being careful not to step on new plants. Weren't these fields supposed to be not good route choices? It was an obvious and useful way to go, rather than slogging through green along the creek. I probably went into the woods a little too early but I was worried about finding places to cross through fencing, a worry in other parts of the park too.
#10 Ahh...I walked in the creek for a while it was delicious!
#11 Crossed the creek right after #10 and went up the steep bank, probably could have stayed on the South side and crossed closer to the control to avoid the climb. Read the contours next time!! Near #11 it was like the land that time forgot...very tall vegetation dotted with thickets.
#12 Okay I thought I was being clever here and crossed back over the creek and ran along the field again, then crossing back over creek again (god the water felt great!) walked alongside the sort of field thing into rootstock city. I don't think that route choice saved any time, but I did see someone I had seen at #11 wtih me so it wasn't a terrible loss of time either, I hope.

When I left I know Sandy Ahlswede had beaten me by 8 min or so, and Bob Fink beat me by a few minutes...I was at the bottom of the pack. Oh well - I got out there today, that's what counts. I won't be able to orienteer for a few weeks because of the Open...here it comes...

hot day at work ... this was all i could manage
fast walking and jogging...interrupted by a lost dog which i held for a bit while the owner came to get him. petey was a little hot, but the owner didn't seem to care much. they had been out running together with petey off the leash and when i found petey there was no human in sight so i called the number on his collar. only 5 min later the owner came, so he must not have been that lost. still i think it was the right thing to do given the heat.
