Everything smooth except #4...thought i could get to building without using trail, briars ate me up. had to backtrack and during the frustration, i mixed up which building i was at and took a bearing off of the wrong building, leading to not finding the control. back to the building to re-route and then realized there was no paved road and realized what i had done. probably about a 10 min mistake? i don't know. i believe some of this mistake was from an overconfidence at thinking i knew where i was without looking at the map.
took some of hughmac4's advice about rough bearings and it really helped. will employ methods further. also need to work on my admin of handling map and looking ahead to next control - i did ok w this but there were a few times i found myself standing near the control before going off to the next one.
things i did right - ran hard downhill using gravity, especially to #7 before the first road.
very enjoyable day without that one heartbreak. great to see so many people out in the woods, especially family members.
although-- dad - did you overdo it today? :) i liked when you took my map and said,'oh i'll just do a few controls' (though you were fully dressed in O garb, i should have seen it coming) and then returned 58 minutes later having beat me only 7 weeks out of a major surgery. this kind of reminds me of the time you took my SAT practice course and got a perfect score, and then told me how easy it was. still -- great to see you looking so chipper! both you and hughmac4 - wow. you are good at this.
all in all, i come away from today feeling that there is still so far to go, and that it will be an enjoyable journey!
(except when i just saw the final results i was freshly wounded !!)
