Note

i was at an all time low in weight (in terms of the last couple years - post back surgery, etc) on dec 29th and i'm trying to figure out what pattern of exercise achieved that. i think the strength training at the gym really is the thing that does it, so i need to kick that up a notch--meaning, add a bit more weight to various machines, add more reps, etc. it's so annoying to be working hard and yet seeing no results in the weight department!!

Hike 35:00 [2]
rhr:62

Horn Pond Woods
larry and i saw a hawk, SO close and it wasn't afraid of us at all. went on the smaller trails but it was hard walkin', with icy footprints dusted over with snow. i was wearing too many clothes for sure. wanted to go longer but didn't want to overdo it since yesterday i wasn't feeling great.
2 PM

Gym-Cardio 55:00 [3]

i bet i was the only person listening to 'clannad in concert' at the gym today! elliptical machine record was set today--but i just could not go another 5 minutes.
3 PM

Core and Stretching 5:00 [1]

quick stretches and various crunches

Trails w/Map 1:00:00 [3]

Prospect Hill Park- Waltham, MA - hiking with a dash of orienteering thrown in

ross emailed out maps today for csu training - a semi-permanent course set with streamers! when i asked him what level it would be, he mailed me back a course more tailored to a beginner - very very nice!

i got out there and gave it a try, hiking with the map and finding some streamers, but not attempting the whole thing, just biting off a little piece for now.

came home and for some reason was exhausted--think i'm coming down with something. been laying next to the fire for a couple of hours drinking tea--won't make it to the NEOC social tonight. but very happy to have a new map and course!

also: my new 'pants' are too thin--legs were frozen upon return!

Gym-Strength Training 1:00:00 [3]

elliptical - 15 min; strength training circuit; 15 min elliptical - i feel great! bring on the snow so i can go xc skiing again soon!

Note

conversation at gym:
girl: "i only cheated a few times this week"
other girl: "yeah, i had some doritos and a ho-ho"
me: "you're on DIETS? how old are you?"
girls: "we're 15"
me: "you shouldn't be worrying about that now--you should be eating whatever you want!"
girl: "how do you work this elliptical machine, it's like SO hard"

later on, gaggle of girls were seen in front of mirror staring at themselves and pinching various parts of their body. something is really wrong with this picture!

Note

no, the shoes are not the right fit. tried them out and they squeak and feel too tight. i have medium length but wide feet! wah :(
12 PM

Gym-Strength Training 1:00:00 [3]

The usual circuit plus a new thigh machine to combat the inner thigh weakness i felt while XC skiing. haven't been to the gym in a bit and i felt it!

i accomplished some important things today: 1) joined NEOC 2) confirmed some maps on the way from some helpful sources and 3) got the right size, shape, and of course, color SHOES! mm hm, they are RED. obviously i'm not planning on blending in.

also i don't know why but i'm kind of obsessed with heart rates these days. i think i'm embracing thinking about it and feeling my heart rate in a way that is finally healthy, as opposed to the bad ol' panic attack days. but it's still shaky territory for me so i have to be careful. my biggest problem with it, b/c of the panic thing, is not pushing myself hard enough so my heart rate gets up there... i.e. not liking the way a high heart rate feels b/c it reminds me of a panic attack. this is what i have to work on, and think to myself: my heart rate is my friend, getting it up there will help me live a longer, healthier life.
