Note

Here's the broken boot / right axle. Must have happened when it got really hot, in the 80s and I was driving a bunch for a floral gig and then orienteering. All fixed now, $400 later, with a brand new right axle/boot (he wanted to use a remanufactured part, which would have been $100 less, but I asked about new instead since it is a recurring issue with Subarus. The part from Subaru dealer + labor would have been $600+!!)

Star Village Green. Arrived and Dasha noticed smoke coming out of my engine...uh oh. Got an oil change last week...something to do with that? After taking a look inside we noticed some yucky liquid all over the inside of the engine, so we (all the people involved at that point) thought it was overfilled or caps not tightened right. Oil level fine.

Went out on a pretty physical course, starting with a lot of pain and finishing with even more.

#1 - got confused by trails / contours competing for my eye and took a wrong turn

#6 probably hardest control - up and over or around? i went around but still had to climb some had some trouble finding the pit after wandering around...it seemed it should be much closer to permanent control marker which i was bearing from b/c I was too high.

In general, not too too hard navigationally but a little hard to read everything on the map without slowing down. Also, just a very physical course and was in a lot of pain and worrying about my car. But I had a good time with my comrades, and I saw a lot of deer and in every sighting they were going the right way to my next control. Maybe they were a Patronus charm?

After meet, car diagnosed by expert Nikolay who thinks it's a "bad boot" covered by grease, not oil. He and Dad cleaned off grease with lighter fluid, then water and paper towel, then we waited a bit for it to evaporate totally. Drove home the long, back way going slow just to be safe. Nikolay says he thinks it's a pretty expensive fix due to labor. I'm just glad nothing blew up on the way home. All this and my dad's boat is also messed up today, not a good day for Mac vehicles.

GPS watch not working.

When the first control was not at the site, I decided that things might be disorganized on the rest of the course, and tried to just relax and enjoy the weather and get some training and workout. (But it also made me less confident and more deliberate about everything.) It was true that there were more things not quite right on the rest of the course, wrong numbers and such, and no water stops which I really wanted, but it wasn't really that bad for me. Actually it was a good lesson on what not to do as a wannabe course setter. It did seem like it was done by armchair only, and that a less experienced volunteer hung controls.

Apparently Dima, who passed me, moved some controls to the correct locations, so I'm guessing we all had different experiences on Green. It made me think back fondly to better days at Tyler - the 2012 meet that Karl set, where we had the mini urban section with the larger map and everything. That was really fun.

Didn't push it too hard today physically to protect the back, but still got a good workout. And the weather was great and it was fun to be a part of the chaos.

I do feel really badly for John Gillette who was obviously being given a hard time by a lot of people at the computer and was probably wishing he didn't volunteer today. :(

How can I be in so much pain after standing/working yesterday, while running does not hurt (as much)? I guess if I ran for 3 hours it would probably hurt a lot. Cut it short just to be safe. Very humid out.

Sandy has agreed to mentor me and help me set the Green course at Gould's Run this summer. We spent a few hours working on it today - all armchair so far. It's so exciting!!!!

This, after a photography gig (paid) and I'm thinking, what a great day!!

Inspired by hughmac3!! Ran to track, 2 miles there and then ran back. Garmin took a minute to catch up to me today, so pace is actually a teensy bit faster, but who's counting ;)

Note

Just got back from a job interview in New Jersey, where they told me, "we're not actually hiring right now, maybe in a few months...But you looked interesting so we wanted to meet you." So why do you have the ad on your website?

And on another note, I am going to eat some chicken tonight. Haven't had any meat in almost four years!

Cut short by thunder and pouring rain.
What a great day, though. It was such a worthwhile experience to give flowers to the ladies at Holy Family Home. Will blog about it later - thanks hughmac3 for your invaluable assistance in my time of crisis. (They called at 10am and said they needed 80, not 50, so I quick had to rip designs apart and make more.)

Note

Okay. I made 50 floral designs in mason jars for the little old ladies at Holy Family Home in Philly to be delivered tomorrow. Now how the heck am I going to get them there??? I guess I was thinking they would somehow fit in boxes in my car, but it's looking dicey.

This is only half the arrangements! Maybe I can strap some to Larry's back and he can carry them. :)
