Slow walk to gauge level of back pain. Not as awful as I thought. When I woke up, it felt a little better than the agonizing middle of the night pain. I think I haven't been walking enough, (doing mostly jogging lately) and not enough core work in the last few weeks. Add heavy lifting (duh) and many bouncy hours in the car, and voila...I need to remember I don't have a perfect back. No TNT tonight for me :( :(

Ridley Creek trails. Some running. Man were there some weird people in the woods today - some event or photo shoot with shirtless / shaved / buff guys on tree trunks, guys in spandex tights wearing cowboy boots, and a lady in a long black gown (with parts of the gown missing) getting her picture taken in the middle of the trail junction. The vibe was porn stars with their clothes mostly on. People are strange.

jogged all w/exception of about 30sec waiting at stoplight and 75 paces up hill by fieldhouse (both during mile 3.) beat my personal best for this 4mile route! don't know why at the faster pace my GPS is inaccurate. when i walk this route it always comes up exactly 4 miles. i think it's time for a garmin forerunner watch thingy.

Tyler Green Course: 20 controls. Encouragement from a few peeps at the registration helped me decide to do the Green, very glad I did.

Major space out at start getting oriented. Why not just look at my compass before I get the map to know which way is north? Duh. "Sprinting" all around buildings was actually kinda fun, but I made some mistakes in there. The rest I felt okay about, with the exception of getting to #17: was up and down along steep hill trying to decide if I could follow along small creek or go up to path, lost time there for sure. #16 was a fun one, climbing up cliff! Then I didn't have much gas in the tank at the end.

GPS track not edited down (Time was 1:10:30, for 5.7km race.)

I did walk (fast) for two small parts of this workout, for about 100 paces around mile 2 and then another 80+ paces up the steep hill leading into the campus near field house. Still, this is the fastest i've ever done my loop in! (and I really hauled it in at the end, for me.)

For some reason my GPS says it was shorter than it really was, it's 4 miles, I've done it over and over with that same result and didn't do anything differently.

Even my eyeballs are sweating at this point! :)

Had another look around Tyler. Ran into Karl Ahlswede, prepping overgrown trails for next week's event. We had a nice chat. Lost my Ray Ban sunglasses, saw some baby deer, met an English Mastiff (bigger than the deer,) bought a cheap vintage bike from the 70s on my way home! (Schwinn Breeze, 3 spd, and it's red.) Found a tick on the back of my leg while stretching- they are SO small. Now I'm looking at every tiny mark on my body with paranoia.

Tyler. Went with old Green map and a plan to just see what the place is like. B/c the parking was so far away from the start, I began in the middle of the course. (although now I find out I was in the wrong place, I followed old directions that said Boardwalk parking area, it was not.) Spent a fair amount of time in the area with all the buildings. Navigating around buildings doesn't seem like it would be hard, but somehow it was for me, maybe because I'm not used to it. After about an hour, I was only halfway done what I had set out to do, but felt really tired and hot and a little dizzy...like a piece of meat baking in the oven. Had to head home. Maybe I'll go back a little earlier in the morning next time!

French Creek - Baptism Creek. Hot n sticky day! I was sure this was going to be so hard, and I was worried I wouldn't even finish. But I did finish! And what a relief to have the 1:10 map! I felt good about every control except #7 which should have been a total breeze but I made a mistake ending up a bit south of it, had to go back out to road where I saw it and went back in. About half was "off-trail."

For the most part, there wasn't a ton of contact with the map needed - meaning, I could just get to the bend in the trail, or run to the end of the creek, etc etc. The only sticky area was between 3 and 4, along the power line, and luckily I remembered what good old Dad told me about the fact that the poles are actually marked and accurate, so I was able to count the poles and then make my way over.

So thanks to everyone who has been giving me advice, and making me feel good about my small achievements....Dad, Sandy, Hugh, Speedy...I really appreciate all the encouragement. I want to keep working to improve and of course I will be continuing to ask you all too many questions!

4.3 on clue sheet, 4.8 on splits results, for a while I thought I had done 11:47 min/km pace, now results on DVOA site say it was 4.3. Pace 13:09 instead.

FCE - Humid and buggy. Woods still full of downed branches/trees from forest fires. Used old Orange from Apr 2006 again, this time nailing 1 and 2 with no issues.

Worked on rough compass bearings and tried to be more aware of contours and contour spacing. Took trails out to the pit near Round Top, then off-trail bearing downhill across creek to trail. From there, explored the area around 5 and 6 but had trouble with the intermittent trail. Wasn't sure exactly where I was, and with so much going on with rocky terrain and little creeks, I took a bearing north to find the larger trail, which I did successfully (and with a sigh of relief.) Identified major boulders on way to trail. Then just trail walking and ID-ing as many features as I could on way back. I'm pooped! Saw no streamers. For this weekend, I will be happy if I just finish the Orange.
