Hike 35:00 [2]
weight:132lbs
Horn Pond Woods with Larry. Fresh coating of snow, new tracks, morning sun. Nice...until....
I see them coming from a long way off: a guy on a cell with two Goldens, one off the leash. The path is single file, so I leash Larry and step off the path (sinking down into the snow a bit.) As the man approaches, I ask him to put his dog on the leash (because honestly I just don't feel like dealing with the pulling and the possible growling, etc.) He replies: "he IS on a leash," pointing to his dog dragging his own leash behind him, smiling nastily, and going back to his phone call.
"Really funny," I say, thinking I'm not sure what I've gotten myself into but I'm going to stand my ground. "Could you please leash him?"
Again, the Masshole goes for the line "He IS on a leash."
Losing a little patience as the dog approaches, I say "It's for the protection of both our dogs, because mine can be a little grumpy with other dogs." At this point the Golden is almost to us, as the owner realizes he has to put his phone down to deal with this annoying situation.
"What, so now we have vicious dogs in the park?" he says, his Masshole nature shining through.
"Listen, you don't have to be an asshole about it," I fire back, "I'm just trying to do the right thing here." Not usually one to confront others directly, this felt like a big deal.
Grabbing his dog by the scruff and pulling him away he says, "You don't have to be such a bitch about it," and walking away, he gets back on the cell (probably telling his caller about how 'vicious' dogs should be put down and we should go out and all buy moronic purebreds.)
Of course as I walk away I wish I could explain that my dog isn't vicious, etc...and probably if I had just let them pass nothing would have even happened between Larry and the Golden. But what really rubbed me the wrong way was his complete lack of awareness of others - clearly my body language indicated that I wasn't interested in our dogs meeting, then I asked that he leash his dog and he refused, then he calls me a bitch.
Thanks for letting me get this off my chest, Attackpoint.
