Orienteering race 34:46 [3] 3.0 km (11:35 / km) +205m 8:38 / km

Day 7 of Oceania - the slump. Mass start at 12pm with M16, M55, W40, W45 all heading off to the same 1st control.... choice was between running like the clappers and get a good time or doing own nav and be quite a bit slower. With temperatures over 30C, I decided I couldn't navigate and run fast - so I joined the pack run.... It was a real pitty us mere mortals had to be slotted in between the 2 World Cup events. We missed out on an interesting and challenging course doing the mass start. Then again, watching the elites fighting it out amongst them was brilliant to watch and very impressive.

Orienteering race 1:05 [3] 5.4 km (12 / km) +260m 10 / km

Oceania Long Distance Champs at Ngatawhai on a 1:15000 scale map. I personally did not have a problem with the scale, but plenty of others with eye problems did. Started off ok but lost time at #3 where I had problems working out the water course. Course was not overly technical but physically demanding. Walked up many hills. Made several mistakes and WinSplits thinks I stuffed up 4 controls. Was quite surprised to find myself in 2nd position only 29 secs slower than Jenni Adams.

Orienteering race 17:29 [3] 1.6 km (10:56 / km) +60m 9:12 / km

Oceania sprint champs in Wellington. Interesting course with first 4 controls in forest area and remaining controls around buildings and park land. Started off cautiously and was quite excited to catch up to Kiwi at 3rd control. Overtook Kiwi at 6th control. Some minor mistakes in building areas. Won race in 17.29.

Note

Supposedly a rest day but Pat and I must have walked about 15 kms around town and Parlament buildings watching the elites again
