Orienteering race 1:23:47 [4] 8.5 km (9:51 / km) +220m 8:44 / km

Southern Champs - Star Posts North.
Very wet day so ran in cap, and waterproof overtrousers, so not in race mode.
Didn't really do a full warm-up as talking to too many people!
Turned out the map wasn't the best.
Steady to #1 even though many more mountain bike tracks on the ground than on the map.
Clean to #2 although winner Mark Saunders had caught me 2mins by then. Control on a vague clearing.
Missed clean lines into #3 which was 3 branches in a wigwam hide, which wasn't higher than the surrounding bracken. Cost a couple of minutes.
Straight to good attack point for #4, simple south bearing and missed off to right, looking for an undefined "clearing" in light green. The line out took me back to where I'd entered the forest so think either the control hung wrong or map crap (Tony Carlysle did exactly same).
Long leg to #5 where I was caught and passed by Dave Kingham. Back with him at #7 when he missed and close at #8 but then he pulled away.

My concentration was broken coming away from #12 by two kids shouting for a dog, and missed correct ride down to #13. Corrected and spiked control, but then had big problems with #14 where again a simple south bearing didn't take me into the correct clump of rhododendrons. Spent 4 minutes running up and down running around poorly mapped thickets before I stumbled across flag.
#15 scrappy as again rhodo thickets didn't fit map, and clean through rest.

Given clothing and attitude then a reasonable marker - still plenty of work to do to get properly fit. And hope for a better map next time.
