Orienteering Meet 1:59:35 [4] *** 5.2 km (23:00 / km) +80m 21:21 / km
ahr:139 max:170 spiked:6/13c shoes: Icebug black 2

Bear Brook NH. 1st time O there!
Perfect weekend and excellent job to UNO and all their supporters for hosting the event.
Congratulations to all my orienteering buddies who placed at The Champs this weekend. Faboulous weather, good friends and comp were all there.
I knew this was going to be a tough area, and it was for me. After looking at my GPS route, I badly missed a number of controls. Maybe I lacked clarity due to some type of dehyration :-) Or the map just kicked my butt .
Whatever the reason NO 5, was killer, just could not seem to be able to relocate off of anything and missed twice even from the next control No 6.
So after 42 minutes later, I was very sloppy for the rest of the meet.

I missed talking to others after, but I had a 17 hour ride in front of me and did get home by 4:00am from the meet, still buzzed from a cup of coffee and the great week of traveling out east to O meets and hiking.

Out east orienteers are lucky to have such great terrain and maps.

US Champs at Bear Brook St Park, NH.
Looking like this was going to be a tough area, but in the end it was not so bad. Almost blew no 1, a 100 meter leg, but recovered and had a pretty good run. 2nd in my age group, 54 seconds back. But lots of guys close too. Probably lost 1 st on the 12 th control as there were 2 root stocks and it was On the southern one. I saw one and headed south, not there and headed up again and found it. Close call.
Great weather and they even had an IPA after. Woo dog!

Model Map at Bear Brook MT.
Small model map and went forward and backward to the 8 controls plus some extra looking around. Kinda thick and lots of boulders, some mapped and some not. The green is ok to get through.

Hiking 3:00:00 [3] 7.6 mi (23:41 / mi)

Vermont hiking.. Near Rudland..we took the Bucklin trail to the top of Mt Killington, near the ski area. Very nice view at the top, but the trees have lost most of their leaves.
The higher we got , the steeper it became. Actually more workout than I wanted, cold at the top too.

Moreau Lake, I ran the middle course from last spring. Maricel ran it backwards and flagged the controls till we met. This was tough and I had to relocate lots to find the flagging.

Went to Happy Valley Map north of Syracuse. This is where the US champs were held in 2011. A very tough area as there were only stone walls to use for nav for the most part. Nice day and some good map, reading when I knew where I was at.
