Orienteering (O’France day 5) 55:19 [3] 6.02 km (9:11 / km) +229m 7:43 / km
shoes: Inov8 212 (black & red)

Risoul Station - M55
A monster of a day to finish off with an advertised climb of 205m. Needless to say I didn’t make the chasing start as you had to be within 30mins of the leader so 30sec intervals in GC order for the rest of us. Second leg was scary, over 1 km running diagonally down a steep slope. Took it steadily and found the control okay. The next four controls climbed back up to close to the start with another second half across the open ski slopes to the finish. 18th on the day dragging myself up to 22nd, if only day 3 hadn’t been so bad. A great orienteering carnival, I definitely benefited from having the red starts as course from the blue start didn’t seem to be so good.

Orienteering (O’France day 4) 36:21 [3] 3.6 km (10:06 / km) +143m 8:26 / km
shoes: Inov8 212 (black & red)

Risoul Station - M55
A far better run than the previous days. Only time loss was on 8, a bingo tree control, where I quickly bailed out to the clearing to relocate before wasting too much time. First half of the course was excellent in the forecast before finishing on the open, steep slopes. 12th on the day to drag myself up to 28th overall.

Orienteering race (O’France day 3) 1:23:20 [3] 6.93 km (12:02 / km) +313m 9:49 / km

Vars - Les Claux- M55
Bus to the start at Col de Vars (2109m), the organisers suggested getting a bus 50 mins before your start time, as the journey was only 10 mins had plenty of time to enjoy the fantastic view. First two controls were in a boulder field and I went direct rather than the longer track option (thought this was stupid in retrospect until I noticed I had the 10th fastest split). Lost concentration a bit on the longer leg to 3 getting confused with the white and individual trees. Stopped for a call of nature and turned around to see the control (5 mins). Huge mistake on 8, the long leg, was reasonably confident until approaching the control, lost contact and decided to climb +50m totally unnecessarily, then back down tho the small lake to the SE thinking it was where the control was before actually working out where I was, probably more then 10 mins lost. Steady to the end for a shocking time finishing in 45th place.

Rafting down the Durance with Cath, Eoin and Aoife. Great fun and the girls had a ball.

Peyrol-Vars - M55
Chair lift up to the arena at 2000m with fantastic views down and across the valley. Very steep terrain with open bits interspersed with larch and line forest. Course basically contoured, went downhill, contoured again and then uphill to the final. Times loses on 2, the big downhill leg where I was very tentative and, 6, a short leg, where I was too high. A lot of walking in the second half where a lack of fitness and maybe the altitiude played its part. Better finishing position than yesterday but still nothing flash - too many scandis!

Mont-Dauphin - M55
Completely screwed up the first control as the map, control descriptions and reality didn't seem to make sense. Control was placed at the bottom of a wall although the control descriptions said NW side of wall junction, a junction you weren't aware of unless you were on the upper level of the rampart which I was - lost over 2 minutes climbing up the stairs, running to the wall and then having to double back. Sluggish on any incline and overshot 9 meaning a very average time. Good area on an ancient fort surrounded by moats and ramparts with little passages and stair cases.
