orienteering race 46:56 [3] 5.0 km (9:23 / km) +100m 8:32 / km
shoes: Inov8 X-Talon 212 (#2)

Probably best to forget this performance... beat Janez to the pivot on the first visit, we had different split, first loop I hit cleanly, but I must have left the pivot (at the base of a hole) 90 degrees in the wrong direction. Couldn't find the control or any features anticipated before it and kept returning to near the hole.

Eventually relocated on a track a few hundred metres away, but had lost over 12 minutes :(

shoes: Inov8 X-Talon 212 (#2)

Warm up.

orienteering race 41:32 [3] **** 4.5 km (9:14 / km) +100m 8:18 / km
shoes: Inov8 X-Talon 212 (#2)

Day 2 - the middle race, also on Oslusa.

Missed #1 again - ignored safe route and went straight, pretty confident I was on-line right up until not finding the control. Buggered around for a bit and found it in some green (as per map).

Mistakes/major hesitation at 7 (was on a spur - possibly first none "hole" feature of the weekend, which threw me) and 9 (was on a hill, which I read as a hole. Looking at the map now, its the only multi-contour hill on the map).

Disappointed to find I'd been beaten by 10 MINUTES !! I think there may have been 5 minutes of mistakes in there. On M21A, I would only be 5 minutes down. Who is this Janez Pretnar ?

Aha - OK, he has form, still running world champs 5 years ago. May be difficult to take 15 minutes out of him in a sprint and mass-start middle distance.

Note

Nutrition note:

I have been struggling with language skills at breakfast time.
I really, really hate eggs. And coconut.
Yesterday I had two fried eggs and a cup of hot milk for breakfast.
Today I had an eggy omlette and a cup of yoghurty yoghurt for breakfast.

To double my misfortune, I popped in to a shop to buy emergency rations and treated myself to what appeared to be a simple choc-ice.... coconut flavoured. OK, so there is a small picture of a coconut on the wrapper, but its only visible with hindsight.

Tonight we have a sprint-O, my start time is 9:37 - think I'm going to have to survive on bananas, apples and the last few jaffa cakes.

run 12:00 [3] 2.0 km (6:00 / km)
shoes: Inov8 X-Talon 212 (#2)

Pre sprint-O warm up on the Bajina Basta athletics track.

orienteering race 12:31 [4] ** 2.2 km (5:41 / km) +10m 5:34 / km
shoes: Inov8 X-Talon 212 (#2)

The night-sprint. M40 was the last class to go off, so had plenty of time to watch everyone else leave and.. nobody come back.

Pretty clean run and pushed fairly hard when I could.
Managed to take over a minute out of Janez Pretnar - may not be enough, since I'm still 14 minutes behind him and my best option for tomorrow is to follow him round so that I don't get lost and get back in time to drive back to Belgrade.

Night Sprint-O - fun.

run 15:00 [3] 3.0 km (5:00 / km)
shoes: Inov8 X-Talon 212 (#2)

Run between event finish and start 3 times (forgot description holder)

orienteering race 1:32:25 [3] 8.5 km (10:52 / km) +200m 9:44 / km
shoes: Inov8 X-Talon 212 (#2)

Tara Open - race 1: long. M40.

So it turns out that 6.2km is quite long.
Managed to mess up #1, despite my pre-race mantra. Lost contact very quickly on the track network in what was to be a foretaste of what was to come.

The "holes" were pretty good to navigate by, but I had real problems with the track network. Also did a 180 at one point, which helped me build quite a large time. Anyway everyone else did the same or worse and I was only 5 minutes off the pace when I left, with one of my rivals already eliminated by an mp (all 4 races count).

Map is dense with information but pretty good. Vegetation was also dense in places.

kayak 1:40:00 [2] 9.0 km (11:07 / km)

Team building exercise - paddle to Alt Neuruppin from some random spot SE of Neuruppin on Ruppiner See.

...in a couple of 10 man canadians.

I was steering our for about 10 minutes before I was fired, after many circles. The next candidate lasted about 5 minutes, before the boss went to the back. Now either its his superior paddling experience, or (as I suspect) the fact that he (who is a big cheese) can then see everyone so they start to paddle, rather than just doing it for random bursts. Anyway, it was fun.

run 51:00 [3] 9.0 km (5:40 / km)

Run around Neuruppin - managed to find my way to the forest at the top end of the lake.

Legs feeling really heavy.
