orienteering race 40:15 [3] **** 4.95 km (8:08 / km) +100m 7:23 / km
shoes: Asics GT 1000 #6 (black)

SA Middle distance

Great fun - heaps of detailed rock in open terrain.
Started fast but careful and thought I was really into the map. Couple of wobbles to #10, but no sign of Alistair who started behind me.

Wheels came off at #11, where I used a rock-free saddle on the map that didn't exist as AP. Eventually recovered from that but then brained out.

Edit: 19:11 at #10, next fastest was 20:58, Alistair (who won) was 22:55.
That's a monumental meltdown (by me).

Shadow Lyra round her first moderate course.

She only needed help at 1 control and confirmation at another.

Happy she is ready to do this, happier that they didn't have any entries left on the EOD hard (thanks Aoife)

orienteering race 1:00:05 [3] ** 7.7 km (7:48 / km) +295m 6:33 / km
shoes: Inov-8 X-Talon 212 (#7 Black)

Oz Champs, long, Gumeracha Goldfields
Guess at distance, forgot to start watch.

Disappointing course, a lot of long path routes that were the fastest routes. Only a few bits of hard navigation. I mainly opted to avoid them, they looked pretty boring. Looks like this paid off on the longest leg, but not elsewhere.

#1 - with El Yonno, who went off like a rocket running M21E. Not completely shocked that he blew a calf muscle.
#2 - went straight rather than path, then small miss, then found crying easy course competitor about 600m off his course. Took a while to figure out where he was on his map, then send him sadly on his way. Looking at splits, this cost me a heap of time as well as momentum.
#3#4 - figured Alistair would be relishing this NZed like green. Only lost a maybe 40 seconds.
#5 - 2K track leg choice with a bunch of climb. Cut across some scrappy stuff to make it straighter and more interesting, but the obvious track route was (edit: not) best.
#6-#8 - Caught Freemo up at #5 , so I led him round these, probably the only decent bit of the course.
#9 - The interesting straight route was over a minute slower, think Alistair went this way too.

5th - bit meh, felt better after looking at the splits.

Exhibit B in how not to mass start. After missing the start at the Goanna, I put my map down the back of my o-pants and followed the fastest guy in the field up a 40m climb that was completely unnecessary.

Followed this up with a demo on how not to handle bingo controls.

Managed to come 2nd in the 3 days, clinging on to 2nd by 9 seconds. Lost a nett $1 more to the hawkeye/cakewoman combo.

Knee OK. Legs tired.

Triadelaide race 2.

Racing a hawkeye/cakewoman betterball combo over splits, so went pretty hard. Fairly good run until I fell at the last control and trashed my knee a biy

Schools champs sprint-O, Keithcott Farm Schools

Much harder than yesterday and I was messier. Lost most time on the wrong level at a canopy control. Fun.

Head to head splits comp with cakewoman - net $2 to her.

orienteering race 16:02 [3] 3.3 km (4:52 / km)
shoes: Asics GT 1000 #6 (black)

Aus Sprint Champs.
Much better, head in it mostly, one small brain fart at #5?, the depression in a bush, then miscounted buildings at last real control.

5th, 1m30 down.

orienteering race 37:27 [3] 5.0 km (7:29 / km) +120m 6:41 / km
shoes: Inov-8 X-Talon 212 (#7 Black)

Oz middle champs, Crooked Straight

Rushed to start after drive up from Adelaide. Missed short keg #1, like a lot of the class, something wrong. Then wasn't confident that I was reading the map right and had a bodgy run, particularly at 8 where I crossed a large road which (eventually) turned out not to be the one I thought.

Just hopeless at the moment but the area was fun, but really different to anything I've been on for a long time.

Note

Someone protested, controller reportedly acknowledged that first control was in the wrong place, looks like classes will be voided.

Maybe I'm not such a spud.
