New map. New park. I was excited. Then it began to storm. Oh boy. Now I'm pumped. I love the summer rain. As long as I have a cap to keep my glasses dry, I'm as happy in rain as a pig wallowing in the mud. I can't explain it. It just is.
But guess what. The rain ended before I got to the park. It was warm and muggy. Any real cooling effect from the rain diminished. Not knowing if there might be a thunder cloud remaining behind, I threw on my cap. I hoped I needed it. But it did not happen. After the second control i removed the hat and stuffed it in my shorts, where it remained until I was done.
The park is beautiful for a sprint. Wide open. Very runable. A few dense hill sides and a lake that force a decision and ultimately some distance. Otherwise, the hardest thing is knowing which direction to run.
The courses where great. Steve did a good job with the bag placement. (Although left-handed Tom found an issue with the approaches.) Even though the park was open, I could frequently not see the bag until I was nearly beyond the feature. This made checking the map and judging the terrain very important. Otherwise a lot of small errors would be made.
I ran as hard as I possibly could. So although slow, I am happy with my performance. I did the longer course first, then the shorter. This had a definite effect on my second performance.
