Running race 2:00:37 [4] 19.2 km (6:17 / km) +1256m 4:44 / km

I'm back, well maybe just for this race...

What a race! This is honestly the best trail race I have ever done, a great mix of everything. Taken over by ultrain this year and they have managed to keep it as good as ever, very similar vibes to when I did it in 2011

Didn't feel very strong on the first climb, partly due to only a short warm up, mostly due to my lack of strength uphill... Was 7th at top of the road but managed to push well when it hit trails and had got down to 5th (just behind 4th) by the top of Mt Claude. Good descent (2nd fastest on Strava), passing 4th and 3rd and catching 2nd right at the saddle. Happy to sit in 3rd up Mt Van Dyke as knew the uphill was my weakness but only dropped 20-30m on him by the top. Ran with him for a little bit having a little chat and then passed and pushed away on the technical section.

Now here I was sure I was never going to catch 1st as I had seen glimpses of him well ahead back on Claude and some walkers had told me I was 7 minutes behind when coming off Claude. So was happy to keep pushing and aim for sub 2 hour 10.

Pushed hard on the Van Dyke descent (taking the strava CR) and then felt relatively good at the start of Mount Roland. Surprised myself as the climb went on and I still felt strong so kept pushing. Even more surprising was running into 1st about 1km shy of the summit. Big confidence boost as I was confident if I stay with him to the top I could go hard on the last downhill and take he win. However I surprised myself again and managed to slip past and push ahead after only a couple of minutes.

At this point I thought sub 2 hours may be possible so I pushed myself to run the rest of Roland and then really smashed myself on the downhill. The descent of Roland was even harder than I remember, nothing like anything I have done anywhere else... Controlled falling to the bottom and then pushed hard on the road to come in just over 2 hours :/ but an amazing race and keen to come back and do it, maybe with a bit of uphill training the 1:54 course record is achievable...

Proudest achievement of the day: Strava CR for Mount Roland descent by over 2 minutes #DOMS
