Orienteering race 42:09 [4] 3.0 mi (14:03 / mi)
shoes: Innov8 X-Talon (3)

Big 5 Orienteering, day 4. Woodbush Forest.
M50L, 4.3km, 180m.
Forest somewhat like the Forest of Dean. Weather also very British so went with contact lens solution.
#1 and #2 in a very runnable block of forest but #3 and #4 were in a block with lush green undergrowth. Both mapped as white but I lost 1.5 minutes to Martin on #4 by going straight. Various other random routes/ hidden flags causing time losses. Still surprised to be as much as 5 mins down on Dave Peel (whose Achilles has made a miraculous recovery). Also 2 mins down on Heather .
5th /17. Winner 37.

Big 5 Orienteering, day 3. Iron Crown Wolkberg.
M50L, 3.7km, 170m.
Adjacent area to yesterday but a bit higher up the mountain. Virtually clean run but still just got pipped by the Nog who is leading overall.
2nd /17. Winner 33.

Big 5 Orienteering, day 2. Paardevlei Wolkberg.
M50L, 6.9km, 310m.
Less unusual terrain today : steep plantation at 2000m altitude. I struggled to run anything uphill but was pretty clean navigationally. Beat the W35's today ;-)
3rd/17. Winner 65 mins.

Orienteering race 48:52 [4] 5.0 mi (9:46 / mi)
shoes: Innov8 X-Talon (3)

Big 5 Orienteering, day 1. Turfloop Nature Reserve.
M50L (same course as W35), 5.9km, 70m.
Not a very successful first attempt at orienteering in SA. The area was vague semi open and I took a while to work out the vegetation mapping. I also decided that my (Australian) southern hemisphere compass isn't reliable. Dodgy bearing meant I lost time at both #3 and #15 (total around 10 mins). Various other smaller mistakes and wilted in the 30 degree heat towards the end. Triple chicked by a bunch ex elites (Heather, Clare and Jenny). Hopefully things will improve from here on.
9th/16. Winner 39 mins.

Trail running 26:00 [3] 3.0 mi (8:40 / mi)

5km on the treadmill in the hotel gym cos not safe to run elsewhere due to big cats. Middle 2k a bit faster. R calf still feeling a bit tight.
4 PM

Note

Golf. 12 hole par 3 course with Martin.
I was rubbish. Good job we're not here for the golf.
