Note
(rest day)

Walk with Janet around the top of Ramsden Clough exploring some new routes. Good loosener as legs feeling trashed, particularly my quads.

Orienteering race 27:53 [4] 3.0 mi (9:18 / mi)
shoes: VJ Supra

JK Relay, Graythwaite (the nicest bit).
Veteran Men (165+). Leg 3 for SYO. 3.9km, 180m.
Helping (on SI check) early on so had no idea how the race was progressing. Nick L apologised for what he thought was a poor 1st leg so I wasn't expecting too much. When Pete G came back from leg 2 I had no idea what position we were in or how far down (or who was out ahead of me). I just went out and orienteered. Early on I realised that I was running with Mark Saunders (BOK) although I wasn't sure whether he was the competition. When he was with me at the 2/3's point I guessed I needed to beat him back. I succeeded in this and was pleased/surprised to hear the PA announce me as the winner.
It turns out I went out in 9th, about 1.40 down on the lead. The winning margin was just over 1 min. Satisfying end to a great weekend.

Orienteering race 58:13 [4] 5.5 mi (10:35 / mi)
shoes: VJ Supra

JK Day 3, Bigland.
M50L, 7.4km, 250m.
Another late start, this time with Clive 6 mins behind me. At least I'd find out the result pretty soon after I finished.
Started well again, catching my 1 min man (Nick L) at #3. Lost direction coming out of #5 and had to use the crossing point to the right of the line. Unsettled I then lost confidence heading to #7 and went for a 2 min wander. Nick would have re-caught me had he not missed #5. Good again after that with the exception of #19 where I made the mistake of following Jon E for a breather.
#14 to #15 was a leg I'd pretty much predicted and took the route I had pre-planned to good effect. As it turned out this was probably decisive in my overall victory (map geeking is worthwhile!). 2nd to Big Jon (57.33) on the day but just sneaked the overall win after Clive lost 4 mins at #4. The three of us were all within 25 seconds overall.
So happy not only for the win but just to finish and be able to compete after 3 consecutive no finishes at the JK. Much of the credit for this is due to Kim B (for good advice and encouragement) and Richard H for the painful massages which have kept my calves in working order. Will I risk the Sprint again next year?

Orienteering race 54:56 [4] 5.0 mi (10:59 / mi)
shoes: VJ Supra

JK Day 2 (first day of proper orienteering). Ulpha Park and Barrow Fell.
M50L, 6.2km, 365m.
Not sure the last start was an advantage; forest was trashed: running off the elephant tracks to try and keep out of the deep bogs. Good clean start through the first forest and moorland section. Lost a little time heading back into the steep wooded slope but it could have been a lot worse. Struggled on the hills (both up and down) after the road crossing.
2nd to Clive H (52.17). Not much I could have done to beat him today. He was simply running faster, although without small misses at #10 and #17 I could have been closer.

Note
(rest day)

Sitting out JK Sprint. Last year I injured my calf at the sprint and sat out the rest of the weekend. Turned out to be a good move...
Not completely restful as I volunteered to help out at the TempO. This involved standing up all afternoon in the rain.
