Slushy shore walk in light rain, very depressing. We seem to have lost quite a bit of snow.

Per Liz' request, did a skate time trial over distance. Just a pear an espresso and half a liter of tea for breakfast, it was also a good test to see how my fat burning capabilities are doing. Also a good climb during this ski, not quite Birkie, but close.

The usual stretch, fast conditions. Roux preferred to run alongside rather than pulling, I noticed that this happens specifically on the flat, where I can maintain a decent speed free skating (can't use my poles with the line being slack). He gets ahead in the steeper uphills, where I slow down, and keeps up easily during the fast downhills. He gets spurts of speed when he catches the scent of another dog ahead, like today's old golden retriever. All in all a great outing with a fast average pace.

Family affair, had both dogs with me and met Rick and Janet who are aunt and uncle of our neighbors. Mellie was a trooper, made it all the way to the Sioux and then the stretch from the RR grade to the mouth on ice that does not look all that sturdy any longer. From the tracks, I am still the only human tempting fate by walking on thick ice. But that may be more inertia and taking the short way back to the car at the Friendly Valley parking.

Margie's program called for 3 x 8:00 L3 and 4 to 6 x 2:00 L4.
I ended up doing 3 x 9:00 L3 on the climb from the bottom of Jolly Long to the Summit via Anchor and Seagull trails. For my 4 x 2:00 L4, I used the steep section of Seagull. I followed this with a long cool-down ski on Seagull to the downhill area, then back via Northern Lights, Sugar Bush and the dog trail. Paid attention to my classic transitions double pole-kick double pole-striding and the reverse.
Saw only two skiers and one skijorer.

Until further notice, walking on the ice-covered Sioux slough will be part of this hike. Met a fellow walker wearing a mask who greeted me like an old acquaintance with "Hi Christian, comment vas-tu?" I had a nice conversation but could never figure out who she was.

Saw off my dear spouse and then went back to car to grab Roux. We passed Lynn and after that, Roux was constantly looking over his shoulder, expecting her to keep up with us. The out portion of the trail was rather slow but things got better on the way back.

After dropping Roux off at the car, I switched boots and skis and headed back out on a quest to find my beloved. Found her sprawled in the snow, unable to get her skis off and earned some brownie points. Tried out the Lower Sugar Bush Trail, a classic-only trail connecting the top of Jolly Long with Sugar Bush and Dog Trails. I figured that taking the trail counter clockwise would be suicidal and went in from Jolly Long. It is indeed a steep descent from the dog trail, ending with a sharp left turn and tracked, no way to quick step around the corner. Many emergency bail dimples showed that skiers were caught unawares. Mt. Ashwabay needs to start rating the trails with a diamond system and also institute some one ways.
