Hyland Man-made Classic Workout
7:40 AM; Hyland Park Reserve

-3.6 °C; Snow
Six laps for 26 km at Highland. the van was not at home this AM, called Lynn around 9:00 to see if she needed her car, which I had borrowed. No need to return, I would have made it seven laps for 30 km but Karl had been stopped without his pass and shooed off the course. Like me, he has it on his fanny pack, which he forgot at home. Happens to me, too, when I'm not driving.
Saw Andy, Bruce, Dan (just as we were leaving) and skied a little with Mo. Later saw it was her BD. Happy birthday, Mo!
Great workout, much better than the EU session last Tuesday! Glide was right on, kick could have been a little better but was adequate.

I must not have pushed the start button on the Garmin hard enough, I noticed some time later. Not cold and a light snow, very nice. We hiked the rough along the tracks between the Bandana Square apartments and Snelling. Not used to ducking under low shrubbery and stepping on soft carpets of last summer's crop of crown vetch anymore.

Pleasant to walk and especially come back into the house without muddy paws. The snow is gone, but at least the mud is too. A school class from Great Rivers came down the pedestrian ramp at Hamline. A little straggler with the teacher doing sweeper duty was worried about the dogs. We gave them wide berth, as we were past them, he thought he might want to pet the dogs but change his mind. Caught up with some middle school boys on their way home from school, they were chatting animatedly. Reminded me walking stretches with one of my buddies.

Heading into a cold wind on my way ot of DT to Cedar Lake Trail. From there, it wasn't too bad because the wind became rather helpful. By far fewer cyclists out compared to yesterday.

When I took the dogs out, it appeared that the predicted rain had been minimal. Decision was made to ride the bike, however, when I stepped our around 6:20, drizzle had started. The road wasn't too wet yet but precip was strong enough to make it hard to see through my goggles. Pretty decent westerly made me opt for the route via Nicollet Mall. Progression was smoother than yesterday, but overall a slower ride, probably because of the headwind.

Riding carefully, the only frozen pavement I saw was at the bottom of Dinkytown Greenway, oddly on the sunny side of one of the overpasses. I decided to take the short route, which turned out to be frustratingly slow because of all the lights. I wish now I had taken my usual route along Cedar Lake Trail.

Gray, drab and thoroughly unwinterlike. Avoiding melt puddles instead of slick spots. Saw colleague in locker room, he takes the shorter route and I take the scenic route, about 2 km longer. He said "See you down the road." I did not believe him even though I catch him typically during the summer months. But the roads were such that I was able to pedal hard and go at a decent pace and caught up with him at where the Campus Connector crosses Como Ave. Another observation: the boardwalk across from Mill City Museum is open again, looks like they fixed another 20 m or so. I wonder why they don't just fix the entire stretch at once. Is it that expensive to have to stretch it over several years?

EU MYR: Classic Intervals 4 x 8:00 L3 and 6 x Sprints. The worst ski since I didn't brush the glide wax out on my skate skis a few years back. It was either no kick, where the tracks where glazed or no glide where the snow was softer. But it was still a good workout, based on my HR. I guess that after having had a series of excellent fast ski workouts in near perfect conditions, it is good to get a reminder of not having it that way all the time. I was convinced I had only done 3 of the four intervals but Mo, who I had skied with insisted there were 4. I had skied 3.

Easier workout than yesterday, relatively speaking. Har to keep an even heart rate in this hilly terrain. First, there seemed to be more deer than people but like yesterday, it was getting pretty crowded by the time I left. Saw quite a few of my friends from the Tuesday night group and skijoring friends Dallas and Amy.
